Shouldn't the school just require parents' to write a note (and if the note seems unlikely, follow up with a phone call?).

You would think. Apparently some parents are just too lazy, or the school was too lazy to go after the parents of the kids who weren't bringing in absense excuses.

It should be the teacher's choice, especially if it helps kids who need an extra boost to get from one grade to the next (like a D to a C).

Yeah, extra credit is a reward and should be used like the lifesaver it is. Especially if you do badly on something before you really understand it; it's like a second chance once you do.

I can kinda understand getting rid of homework, especially if alot of the kids have jobs after school, or something to that effect.

That was one of the points the article made, I believe. Children work, older children tend to have to take care of their younger siblings, etc.

Though, homework over the weekend would seem the only logical thing to keep, since it's use would be to keep the facts in the kids' head for the next week...I don't think they'll forget it over one night.

Weekend homwork would be good, even if it was just a weekly review packet. A few problems of everything to make sure you remember what's what.^^
