Day 28
September 15th
I didn't really get going today until around 2, but I eventually took a shower and even did my laundry. After I was finished, Pawel and I met up and went for a walk to explore a little bit. Earlier this morning, he had found this cool vintage store with a lot of patches and buttons and a bunch of other shit I dig, so of course I wanted to check that out. He wanted to go back as well, so that's where we were headed.
As we were walking, I looked up and saw that Harold's Chicken Shack was right in front of us. I was pretty hungry so I thought 'what great fortune'. Lindsay had taken me to this place last time I was in Chicago and it was mad good. The area started to feel familiar and I sort of had a sense of where I was. Being in so many other cities recently and not having a sense of where I am has been weird. This feeling of familiarity was nice. I knew there was a bar across the street with mad video games. It's called Emporium and has similar signage as the one in Dazed and Confused. I didn't get to go there last time, so I thought we could grab a brewsky there on the way back. We stopped in Harold's and each got pizza puffs. It took forever and it was hot as fuck in there, but they were tasty.
The store with all the cool shit was basically next door. I ended up buying this Las Vegas hat. I love hats and figured it'd be a good memento from the trip - a Vegas hat, bought in Chicago. I had earned this one and owed it to myself.
I also got a couple of rad lighters. They're both refillable and were only a few bucks. I particularly like the one with the pup on it. It has a nice texture to it. I also like how small it is and jesus christ how cute is that dog.
We checked out the Emporium on our way back. I ordered a sour beer - it was okay, but not the best I ever had. The games are cheap at 25 cents a piece. We were both absolutely terrible at Mortal Kombat, but Pawel beat me. I was Sub-Zero and eventually figured out how to do the freeze move, but Pawel was Raiden and nasty with the blocker. I played a few games of pinball and sipped my brew, the whole time still thinking about how cute that dog is on my lighter.
We eventually made our way back to the house and rested up a little bit before heading over to Nick's art show. It was so sick to see Nick's sculptures up close in this setting. I've been to Nick's studio a bunch of times and I've seen a lot of his pieces, but never these ones up close like this. After a couple glasses of wine, I walked around and stared at each one for a very long time.
Nicole met up at the show and it was so rad to reconnect with her. Nicole and I used to work together in Brooklyn, but she moved to Chicago about a year or two ago. I always felt a connection with Nicole, so it was awesome to see each other and hang here in Chicago.
After the art show, we headed over to the after-party. The after-party was cool and there was even some live tunes, but there was no toilet in there. Pawel and I ended up taking a piss across the street in a parking lot. This turned out to be the highlight of the night when I realized I still had that bone in my pocket. We lit it up and got pretty baked before heading back to the party. When we got back to the party, the rest of the gang was holding down the bench out front, so this was perfect.
After the after-party, we went to some bar. I was pretty beat by this point, as was Pawel, so we took a car back to the spot. It was around 1:30 and we were both starving. We checked Seamless and ended up ordering Papa John's since that was basically our only option. There isn't much food open late around here and I realized once again how dope New York City is. These other cities are cool, but New York has it all especially when it comes to food and I'm blessed to live there.
