"Did she finally go back to sleep?" Sam asked as he rolled over to face Dean.

"Yeah. Probably won't be for long though. Getting teeth has to hurt."

"Did you give her Tylenol or Motrin?"

"Tylenol. She was so upset and I didn't want anything to irritate her stomach. She didn't even want her bottle, but I got her to drink some."

"That's because you're a good daddy," Sam reached out for Dean and pulled him close.

"Next time it's your turn to get up."

"I know."

Dean sighed, "Did you set the alarm?"

"Yep. Bright and early."

"I'm glad tomorrow's Friday. This week has been hell."

Sam murmured an answer as he buried his nose in the nape of Dean's neck. They'd become experts and falling asleep at the drop of a hat because they never knew when Elizabeth would wake up again.

***

The alarm woke them both up. Dean convinced Sam to stay in bed a little longer, he'd make the coffee and grab Elizabeth if she woke up. Sam gave him a kiss with morning breath and sunk back down into the bedding.

Dean started the coffee and tuned on the radio in the kitchen. He was humming along as he scoped out the refrigerator to see what he could throw together for breakfast. He was cooking and didn't hear when Elizabeth woke up. He went back to get Sam for breakfast and found him lying on his back with the baby sound asleep on his chest.

"Breakfast's ready." Dean pulled on his jeans and grabbed a shirt. "How's she doing?"

"Do you think she gets lonesome in her own room?"

"What?"

"Her room is down the hall from ours. Do you think she misses us when she's there?"

Dean let most of what Sam said slide by because of lack of sleep. "She's going to be clingy when she doesn't feel well. I can't blame her since I use you for a pillow, too."

Sam chuckled. "What did you make for breakfast?"

"Eggs. They're going to be cold if you don't get to the table soon."

He sat up with his arms securely around the baby and started to go through his clothes one-handed.

"I'll take Elizabeth and get her started on her morning bottle. Better move that butt of yours or you'll miss breakfast and any quality time with Elizabeth before Jo gets here!"

Sam dove for his clothes and found the ones that were the cleanest. He was going to have to tell Dean that they needed to do laundry soon.

He sat at the table, shoveling in food as he watched Dean cradling Elizabeth, talking to her in a soft voice until she smiled back at him around the nipple. The doorbell interrupted their domestic scene.

"That'll be Jo." Dean set the bottle down and raised Elizabeth to his shoulder to burp. "Time to go, Sammy."

After one more bite, Sam chewed as he went through the motions of getting his boots, hardhat and lunchbox.

"How are you this morning?" Dean asked the cheerful lady on his doorstep.

"Dying to play mommy," Jo took Elizabeth from him and she burped with Jo's first pat to her back. "Don't you have to get to work?"

"Sammy took time fixing his hair today."

Sam protest from deep inside the house.

"Okay, the little one kept us up with her teething," Dean explained.

"This little angel? I can't imagine her doing something like that. She's so sweet!" Jo brought Elizabeth into the living room and gave her one of her toys.

"Yeah, well, she'll probably sleep all day and keep us up again. Give her Tylenol and Motrin as usual if she needs it--"

"I know--"

"She needs to have a full stomach to take Motrin--"

"Yep--"

"And if she gets too fussy or you think we need to bring her in--"

"I'll call you. We've been over this. She'll be fine."

"I'm ready," Sam stopped by the front door and looked at Dean. "Are you?"

"Yeah."

Jo supplied, "He was giving me the rundown of everything I already know again."

Sam laughed. "He does that."

"Shut up," Dean snapped. "You're no better."

"I am when we leave her with Jo."

Dean grabbed his own hardhat and lunchbox and together they headed out the door to the construction site.

***

During their lunch break, the guys asked Dean questions about his sweet ride. He was so proud to tell them every detail about the Impala as they leaned forward with interest. Sam wandered off and called home to check on Elizabeth."

"Why do you guys keep calling?" Jo answered the phone.

"What do you mean keep calling? This is the first time I've checked on Elizabeth."

"The first time you called but Dean's already called twice."

Sam just shook his head at Dean's protective streak even though Dean teased Sam that he was the psycho-overprotective parent.

"So she's fine?"

"Of course. I'm letting her watch Barney. Don't tell Dean."

"I won't." Sam smiled. "You're going to catch hell for that you know."

"It'll be awhile until she starts to sing those annoying songs. I'm not too worried."

"Okay. We'll see you our usual time."

"Sure. Bye."

Sam chuckled as he walked back to his group of co-workers.

"Where were you?" Dean asked.

"Checking on Elizabeth. Guess you already did that."

Dean's ears turned red. "We've got to get back to work." He turned away before the guys could see him blushing.

"What's up with him?" a guy asked.

"Just got caught up in something at home," Sam picked up his tools and headed back to his work station.

***

Jo had already given Elizabeth her bath when Dean and Sam returned.

"Have any special plans for the weekend?" Dean asked.

"Working at the Roadhouse. Looking for Mr. Perfect. I kind of doubt I'll meet him at work."

"You never know," Dean warned. "Hunters are pretty perfect just on their own. I'm sure you could polish one up and impress Ellen."

"I'm not so sure about that." Jo slid her coat on. "See you on Monday?"

"Bright and early," he replied as he shut the door behind Jo.

***

Sam took a shower while Dean fed Elizabeth her bedtime bottle. Then, he came out and they switched places so Dean could shower.

Dean gave a relaxing sigh when he walked into their bedroom. Sam was already in bed.

"Did you tell her goodnight?" asked Sam.

"Of course I did. I made sure the baby monitor is on, tucked the blanket in around her, and kissed our baby girl. She's going to sleep for awhile."

"Good," Sam groaned. "I'm beat."

Dean stripped and slid across the sheets until his naked body was flush with Sam's nearly bare one. "Sammy," Dean whispered in his ear. "I thought maybe we could have some fun."

"Dean, I'm tired."

"I'll do most the work," Dean promised as his fingers hooked the waistband of Sam's boxers and slid them down over his hips.

Sam groaned but didn't protest. He even lifted up so Dean could get the offending clothing completely off.

"Don't I always?"

Dean pressed up against Sam's back as he reached in the drawer for the ever important bottle of lube. He kissed along Sam's neck as he raised one of Sam's legs to give him access to that sweet little hole. He teased Sam by running a slick finger around the rim over and over. Sam shifted his hips back, trying to get the digit inside.

"No way. Patience, Sammy. We don't get to do this much anymore. I plan on taking my time."

One hand gripped his pillow while the other clawed the sheets. An evil chuckle echoed in Dean's throat as he dipped his head to run his lips across Sam's shoulders as he slowly poked his finger in.

Sam gasped and tried to push himself back on Dean.

Knowing his brother's urge to move ahead, Dean slid another finger in. He stretched Sam around his fingers. The muscle gave little by little as he distracted Sam by finding the spot by his ear that worked every time.

"Dean . ." Sam whined.

"One more minute, Sammy." Dean lubed himself up before cautiously pressing himself in. Then, he laid still, formed to Sam's back. Dean had to catch his breath. "This is how it's going to work," Dean shifted his hips slightly. "Just a little, bit by bit."

Working his way to slow rhythm, Dean gently blew across Sam's sweaty skin. Goosebumps prickled a path across Sam's neck and he couldn't suppress a shiver. He reveled in the short thrusts that crept him closer and closer to completion. It was so good and simple and relaxing.

With sweat dripping down Dean's face, he reached around and took Sam in his hand. It didn't take much stroking before Sam called out and inside he pulsed against Dean in his channel. That sent Dean over and he was able to partially muffle his yell by burying his face in Sam's hair.

They laid there, trying to remember how to breathe. When they were still, the air was too cool when it stuck the dampness of their skin. Dean pulled the sheet over them and curled into Sam, who had flipped over to his back.

"We should clean up," Sam said half-heartedly.

"Nope. I'm tired and staying right here. We can wash the bedding tomorrow."

"At least it's the weekend."

"Besides, maybe we could have another go tonight."

"That's very optimistic for two guys with sleep deprivation."

Dean laughed. as he snuggled closer. "A man can dream."

She came out of nowhere. Dean's gun was knocked out of his hand and he quickly took inventory of anything around him that could be used as a weapon. He wrapped his fingers around a large stone and pounded her head with it.

"Get off me, you filthy witch!" He cried out as her skull cracked.

Sam stood at the edge of the clearing, stunned by what he was seeing. John had no such qualms. He ran to where Dean was and pulled him off the bloody body.

"Dean!" He took Dean's wrist and caused his hand to drop what it was holding. "What possessed you to grab something off her altar?"

"Altar?" Dean was confused. "What the hell are you talking about?"

John pointed to where the stone lay with the symbol etched on it in plain view. Dean looked back at the spot where he'd grabbed it from and noticed the splintered piece of wood.

"That's an altar?"

Sighing, he let go of his son. "Didn't you think before touching it?"

"Yeah, I thought I needed something to defend myself with and it was there. What else was I supposed to do?"

Still silent, Sam stepped over to where he could see the symbol. It wasn't one that he recognized.

"For God's sake, get back!" John shoved at Sam. "We don't need both of you jinxed by it." He raked his fingers through his hair. "We just need to find out what the sigil means so we can reverse it. Let's call Bobby since he's got all the books."

Dean drug his feet as he followed his family back to the car. He could feel disappointment weighing him down. It wasn't a totally foreign emotion but it still wasn't one that he was comfortable with.

As always, Sam stayed quiet and moody during the whole drive. John was absorbed in his thoughts and Dean didn't feel up to holding a conversation with him just then. Even having the radio on didn't break the tension. If it would have been just Dean and Sam, Dean would have been belting out the songs off-tune. Around John, Dean had to be perfect and that didn't include acting his age of twenty-one years.

***

"Are you certain, Bobby? No, I don't doubt you, just . . . Is there a ritual to reverse it? We're talking about Dean here," John shot his elder son a pointed look. "You know what the chances are. Yeah. Keep in touch."

"Well?" Dean demanded.

"Bobby found that symbol. It's for a fertility spell. He laughed his ass off when I told him that you were the one that touched it. If it was Sam, it wouldn't be an issue."

Dean slumped back on the bed. "Is he sure?"

"You ever known Bobby to joke about something like that?"

Groans came from where Dean had buried his head underneath a pillow. He didn't want to hear any more.

"That means you," John pointed at Sam, "need to keep a close eye on him. No women at all. Condoms aren't going to work. He's not taking any chances at having a baby so you've got to help me keep an eye on him."

"Yes, sir." Sam mumbled at he stared at Dean's prone body stretched across the bed.

"Good." He grabbed his coat. "I'm going out. Make sure he doesn't go anywhere." With that, John left for the nearest watering hole. He'd had a draining day and didn't know how he was going to handle being a grandfather. Sam would do his best but once Dean got an idea (or woman) in his head, he generally succeeded.

***

"You really did it this time," Sam said as he turned from the door. "Outdid yourself. Really."

"Don't remind me."

"He's pissed."

"You think?" Dean snarked.

"So you didn't recognize the altar?"

"Was there an one hidden in that tangle of trees? Who the hell builds one like that?"

"Apparently, the witch did."

"Smartass."

Sam couldn't hide his smile at his brother's misfortune.

"Don't laugh at me, asshole. It could just as easily have been you."

"Nope. I wouldn't have dropped my gun."

"Cause you're so perfect."

"Yep."

Dean sighed. "At least I don't have to pick up women for awhile. It was getting old to flirt, pick them up and drop them off alone. That last one was really ticked."

"Cause you didn't put out?"

"If I wasn't already turned off of girls, she would have done it right there."

"So guys turn you on?"

"Just you," Dean pulled Sam onto his lap. They fell backwards on the bed, laughing at their luck. That crazy witch just made their life easier until Bobby found a cure.

***

Poke. Poke.

"You're losing some definition there, Sammy," Dean teased. "Do I need to up your training? Can't have Dad think you've been slacking."

"I do training just fine, Dean. Ever think it could be your cooking that's the problem?" Sam snapped back.

"You know our resources are limited." Dean wasn't joking any more. "I do the best I can."

"Maybe if we got some fruits and vegetables instead of all the bacon and red meat you'd have more options."

"You expect me to eat vegetables? Have you totally lost it?"

Sam shook his head. "I don't even know why I try talking to you."

Dean poked Sam in his side as he went past.

"Knock that off!" Sam skirted away and slammed his bedroom door behind him. He slumped down on his single bed, trying not to let what Dean said bother him. His jeans had seemed to fit more snug, but they were always so loose to begin with that he couldn't be sure that he hadn't shrunk them in the drier.

He could hear Dean's off-key singing through the house. It both irritated him and made him want to cry. Dad might say mean things to him but Dean never had. Mortified, he began to sob. Overwhelmed and extremely tired, Sam decided the best course of action was to sleep. He prodded his belly for a moment before he fell asleep. He had lost muscle definition and was getting soft.

***

"Sam's too sick to go on a hunt." Dean stood up for his brother. "He can stay here and bury his nose in a book. It'll be heaven for him."

"We really need him along. I know we've done hunts with the two of us but it is safer with three. Besides, he'll have to learn to hunt under any circumstances. The monsters don't take a day off just because a hunter has the sniffles."

Frustrated with his dad's bullheadedness, Dean told him, "It's not just a cold. He's barely gotten out of bed. When he does creep out, he looks like death warmed over. He'd be no good to us out there. I'd spend more time worrying about him than concentrating on the hunt. Do you really want that?"

John wanted to yell at his sons to obey. He didn't want to admit that Sam might be better off at home. So, he stayed silent.

"I'll get his homework that he's missed before we leave. It should keep him out of trouble." Dean left the room and the conversation was over. John knew when he'd been bested.

***

Sam stared at the pile of books that Dean had brought him from school. The flu had kicked him on his ass and he was having a hard time getting to school at all. He'd be able to catch up while the house was quiet all weekend. Dean and John had left on Friday and wouldn't be back until Monday at the earliest.

He sighed as he picked a book, opened the cover, and started to read.

An hour later, he'd made himself a sandwich and decided that he deserved a break from studying. He was disappointed when his stomach didn't take to the sandwich all that well. Slowly, the feeling got worse until he found himself puking in the bathroom. He got so tired and wrung out that he fell asleep on the cool tile floor. At least no one was there to ridicule him for that.

***

Dean had called him geekboy for as long as Sam could remember. When the flu drug on and nobody else caught it in the tight quarters they lived in, Sam did a little research. Then, he got scared and did a lot of research. There was no other excuse for it. The witched had cursed Dean with fertility and Sam was pregnant.

It was a struggle to finish high school. Dean was so proud of him at his graduation. Sam was thrilled to see Dean in the crowd but was a little hurt when John didn't return from his hunt as promised. That evening, Dean insisted on taking Sam out to supper. It wasn't a graduation party like his classmates had, but it was celebrating Winchester style.

"How's it feel to have the rest of your life ahead of you?" Dean asked around a mouthful of steak.

Sam shrugged. "I've known for awhile about Stanford, so I don't feel much different than yesterday."

"You still determined to go there?"

"They gave me a full scholarship, didn't they? How could I ever pass something like that up?"

"You can't," Dean replied. "You have to go. I don't care if I have to drag you there kicking and screaming, you're going."

Food wasn't all that interesting with the change of topic. Sam poked at what was left on his plate. "I have a bus ticket for next week."

"Next week? Doesn't school start in the fall like everywhere else?"

"I want to get a job and make sure everything is in order before I start. I only get the chance to do this once. I want to do it right."

Dean nodded. "Are you sure you have to leave so early? I thought we might have some time this summer to . . . you know. Dad's been around too much for us to be together but he takes longer jobs in the summer. He'll ditch us for at least one of those."

"I don't think I can stay," Sam tried to keep his voice from cracking. "It's better if I just go. Then you can hunt with Dad and not have to worry about me tagging with."

"Tagging with? You're part of a team, Sam."

"It just doesn't seem that way. Besides, where was that relationship of ours even going anyway?"

Dean appeared hurt. "Did you find someone else, Sammy?"

"No."

"Are you sure?"

"Yes."

"Then how could you say that to me? We'll always be brothers and I thought our stint as lovers would last that long, too. We never really talked about it, but I assumed you knew."

Sam had waited months to hear Dean say that he was needed but now it was too late. He knew he couldn't be intimate with Dean because his body was already changing. He couldn't tell Dean about being pregnant, either. Dean's main goal in life was to kill as many monsters as possible. Sam was determined not to stand in his way and still provide for the life growing inside him.

"It's not like we've been close lately. We've done brother things but nothing else. Moving for Stanford won't change that. I'll still be just a phone call away and you can stop by anytime to visit." The lies rolled off Sam's tongue and for once Dean actually bought them.

"This separation is something you really want?"

"No, but I want a future that doesn't revolve around hunting."

The somber mood killed even Dean's appetite. A couple of To Go boxes later, they were headed home in a silent car, neither of them speaking. Strangely, there was nothing left to say.

***

His first stop when he reached Stanford was the admissions office. He told them he had a family emergency and would have to enroll a semester late. Since he had such good grades and showed quite a bit of promise, they allowed him to keep his scholarship and start just after the new year.

Sam's phone rang at least daily for the first week. He talked to Dean and made up what he would have been doing if he was going to college in the fall. Dean never brought up Dad and, as far as Sam knew, he'd never asked how Sam was, either. To be discarded so easily hurt, but he told himself that it was for the best. His future didn't include his family. And if that didn't sound screwed up, what did?

***

The blonde gal at the daycare took a liking to Sam. It helped that Joey was adorable and had every employee wrapped around his little finger. They got to talking when Sam would drop Joey off and pick him up. Before he started classes at Stanford, Jessica asked him out.

Jessica was a very forward thinking woman. She had no qualms about being assertive and going after what she wanted. When she set her sights on Sam, he didn't have a prayer.

***

Joey was five years old and a handful. He was always on the go and tired Sam and Jess out before he went to bed.

"What will the teacher do next year? Will she have twenty Joeys in her class?" Sam asked.

"She'll have only one Joey, but the other kids will have similar energy. They should wear each other out."

"That's where we went wrong." Sam embraced her from behind and buried her nose in her fruity scented hair. "We only had one instead of two."

"Another one is a few years away yet, honey. You're still taking classes, remember?"

Sam groaned. His schooling wasn't going as he'd planned. He was only able to go part-time and lost his scholarship to Stanford. He and Jess had married and moved to a small college town in the midwest. He was getting his education, it was just taking too long.

A knock on the door startled them. Sam almost fainted when he opened the door to see Dean on the other side.

"Hey, Sammy. Got a beer?" He didn't wait to be invited in. Sam caught the scent of his leather jacket as he moved past and it brought him back in time. It was the smells that he knew so well and had brought him comfort over the years. "So you decided against Stanford?" Dean asked as he casually leaned against the counter.

"I met Jess and my life took off in another direction," Sam explained.

Dean spotted a picture on the wall. "Cute kid. Who is he? He kinda looks familiar."

"That's our son, Joey," Sam answered just as Jess ushered the little boy into the room. "Speak of the devil, here he is. Joey, this is your uncle Dean. Go on, say hi to him."

"Like uncle Chris?" Joey asked.

"Yes," Sam laughed. "Just like uncle Chris."

Dean set his bottle aside and squatted down so he could be eye level with the boy who had captured his attention. He couldn't put his finger on why the kid looked like someone he should know. He chalked it up to being Sam's boy, so of course he'd look like Sam did when he was that age.

"Hey, Joey. I'm your uncle Dean."

"Nice to meet you," Joey said politely and extended his hand. Dean looked past Joey and sent Sam a questioning glance.

"Manners never hurt, Dean."

The older brother shook the small hand that was offered. He'd barely let go before the kid was off in a flash. Apparently the novelty of being a new uncle had already worn off.

The three adults chatted for awhile as they listened to Joey make his own noises to accompany the video game he was playing. "Uncle Dean! Will you play with me?"

"Sure. Be right in." Dean called back. He looked back to Sam and Jessica, "I'm back to being cool again. See ya!"

From the doorway, they watched Dean and Joey blast away on screen. Sam had known that Joey's mannerisms came from Dean but it was even more evident when they sat side by side. Sam's heart ached because he knew he could never tell Dean that Joey was his.

"Why didn't you tell Dean that Joey's mother died before you met me? Didn't he know her?" Jess asked

"They never met. Besides, you're the only mom Joey knows."

Later on, when Jess was putting Joey to bed, Dean asked how old Joey was.

"Five," Sam replied, not adding that he'd be six in another couple months.

Dean did math backwards in his head but still counted it out on his fingers. "Five years old? Man, you sure didn't waste anytime. What did you do? Knock Jess up the night you got into town?"

'Something like that," Sam hid behind his beer bottle, hoping that he didn't sound as broken as he felt.

"Good going," Dean slugged his shoulder. "Always knew you had it in you."

Sam wondered if he could have handled being a single dad any differently. Would it have been better to tell Dean and hope that he'd stick around? There was no way he could come clean now or in the future. He'd told his wife about a woman who gave him Joey. He could never tell Dean that the boy he played with and would probably end up adoring was his own.

His heart broke for Dean, Joey and himself. Dean and Joey would never know the truth. Dean had been deceived and Joey's life was based on a lie. Sam, on the other hand, couldn't forget. Every time he saw Joey's green eyes, he thought of Dean. When he had his little tempter tantrums, Sam could picture Dean doing the same.

Sam's happy (even though it was fake) life was no more. He was sentenced to live a life full of 'what ifs' that he couldn't share with anyone.

By the time Sam was ten, he'd already had enough head injuries to last a lifetime. Dean didn't know if it proved that he wasn't protecting Sam enough or that Sam was just too clumsy to be saved. A concussed Sam was nothing new. John had dropped the boys at a motel and high-tailed it out of town. Dean was in charge of keeping an eye on Sam. He knew the symptoms of a concussion and signs to watch for that could indicate a bigger problem.

"Need more ice?"

"How about a pain pill?" Sam countered.

"Not when you have a head injury. Aspirin?"

"Whatever."

Dean felt bad for Sam, he really did. He'd had his share of lumps, cuts and broken bones. As a big brother he'd do anything if he could take Sam's injuries on himself. Sam didn't even have to work the puppy dog eyes for Dean's self-sacrificing attitude to take over.

Ice. Water. Aspirin. One crabby Sammy finally asleep and unable to whine anymore. Dean set the alarm clock and tried to get a little rest before he'd have to wake his brother.

***

Dean's eyes shot open. For an instant, he didn't know what had awoken him. Then, he heard the rhythmic squeaks of the bed next to him. Was Sam . . .? Dean had tried to have the birds and the bees talk with him and Sam had turned beet red and shouted at him to shut up. He had doubted Sam was going to wonder what that particular part of him was for any time soon.

Assured that he wasn't going to see something that could scar him for life, he turned on the light. Turned out he was wrong. Sam deathly still but spasming was so much worse than Sam jerking off.

***

Once the doctors figured out that Sam was epileptic, they started him on anti-convulsants. He had difficulty getting used to the medications and handling the various side effects. He battled sleepiness and a decreasing appetite.

Even when his levels were in the therapeutic range, Sam had seizures where he would just space out and other ones where he’d drop to the floor. When Dean asked the doctor if there was any kind of alarm they could use to know that a seizure was impending, he was told to get a dog. Some dog can sense seizures in their owners.

Dean skipped telling John that piece of information. He didn’t share it with Sam, either. He didn’t want to get the poor kid’s hopes up. He’d always wanted a dog and asked their dad for one quite a few times. A phone call to Bobby and Dean knew that they’d have a companion/seizure dog for Sam as soon as Bobby could train one.

**

More hunts, motels, inconvenient seizures and accusing stares. It’s hard to keep a low profile when someone in your group drops like a bag of rocks in the middle of a store. Worse yet is when Sam had one during a hunt. Luckily, he was posted as lookout that night. Dean and John had wondered why they were getting attacked from behind without any warning yell from Sam. When they got to him, the supernatural threat was gone and Sam had knocked his head against a rock.

“Looks like he’s bleeding pretty bad,” John growled. “I’ll get the weapons in the car and come back for you. See if you can wake him.”

Dean gently tilted Sam back towards him. He could feel the fine tremors still coursing through Sam’s body. He hummed Metallica because it was the most soothing sound he knew.

***

Sam’s bruised and battered head was on its way to healing when Bobby invited them to his place. John didn’t know what to do with Sam. He knew he couldn’t bring him on hunts but other than that he was at a total loss.

A brown puppy raced off the porch when the Impala pulled in the scrap yard drive. She wagged her tail so hard that her whole bottom half moved. Her yipping made the boys smile. John scowled at the pup and continued on to where Bobby stood at the top of the stairs.

“You got a mutt?” John asked. “You lose your mind since we met last?”

“I ain’t lost it,” Bobby scoffed. “The dog isn’t yours so you have no say about it.”

“Why would I want a say concerning your pet?”

“He’s not my pet. He’s a seizure dog and a gift for Sam. Sadie will be able to sense when a seizure is coming on and help Sam prepare for them. She can even go for help.”

“You didn’t ask me if he could have a dog!”

“You’re right, I didn’t. Dean had asked the doctor and then did some research on his own. He called me and I looked into the idea. Not many places sell the specialty dogs but I was able to get one with a good temperament and train her with what she’d need to know.”

“There is no leaving here without the damn dog, is there?”

“Nope. Not unless you want a bullet in your ass. She’s going to be with Sam all the time. Get used to it.” That said, Bobby descended the steps and yelled to the boys, “What do you think of Sadie? Isn’t she a sweetheart?”

Sam’s face lit up and Sadie happily gave his face a bath.

“That’s a little gross, Sam,” Dean grimaced.

“Watching you with girls is worse.”

Dean begged to differ but didn’t need John overhearing about his exploits with the female population. “I guess she is kind of cute.”

“You bet your ass she is,” Bobby’s voice boomed above them. “She’s trained to help move objects out of the way if you fall. She can carry meds in that container on her collar. She knows her job damn good. Taught her myself.”

“You did?” Sam’s eyes were huge.

“Sure did. Couldn’t trust your health to just anyone, Sam.” That’s the closest Bobby ever came to breaking into tears because of his love for the boy.

Grumbling, John cleared out a corner of the Impala’s trunk to make room for the dog supplies. He still didn’t see the point in having the mangy mutt around, but if Sam seized and the dog helped, he’d get that dog a silver plated water bowl.

They were trying to make good time to North Carolina. John was gritting his teeth because Dean had given him a wrong direction and it had taken hours to get back on track. Sadie started whining from her place in the back seat.

“I thought you said you let her out,” he shouted at Dean.

“We did! Sam gave her food and water, too.”

The howling was so loud that John couldn’t drive any longer. He whipped open the door to the backseat. Sadie didn’t even notice him. She was busy sounding her alarm and nosing around Sam’s body to make sure she’d removed as many dangers as possible.

He didn’t even have time to scold the dog before Sam started his tell-tale shaking. Right then, John knew, no matter the expense, Sam had himself another shadow.

***

They were settled in a small town that probably didn’t even have a dot on the map. They’d arrived shortly after the school year had started. Once he made sure the boys had what they needed, John was gone on a hunt.

John had been gone about a week when strange things started happening. It was all over town that a widow had died when she’d gone to visit her late husband’s grave. She was old, so something like a heart attack or stroke would have been expected. But, it looked like she’d been mauled by a wild animal. The cemetery was near the center of town, but wildlife was a small possibility. Sam and Dean had other thoughts.

“Why are we here again?”

“You know why,” Dean grabbed items from the trunk and stuffed them into a duffle. “Hellhounds, Sam, hellhounds.”

Sam shoved his hands in his pockets. He wanted a normal life. They’d blended in with this town and Sam didn’t want hunting to make them outcasts again.

“It’s a one night job. Quit complaining.” Slamming the trunk, Dean turned to face the gate. “Let’s go.” He walked off without even looking behind him.

The moon wasn’t full but it still gave off light. The crunch of the dead leaves made it difficult to be quiet. He heard Sam and Sadie following him.

A low growl from the side was all the warning Dean received before he was eye to eye with the beast. Instantly, he switched into a hunting machine. His focus narrowed to the creature that was trying to kill him.

Sam stayed a few steps back from Dean. Sadie began running around him, blocking him from going in certain directions. One second he felt a little light-headed. The next, the world went black.

Sadie kicked into action. She’d been able to edge Sam to the middle of the rows of headstones so he had plenty of room to fall safely either way. When he landed, he’d crumpled in on himself. She got busy pushing his arms off his chest and rolling him onto his back. His legs were harder to move because they were longer. Still, she untangled him until he was lying supine on the ground.

She went to his head and licked his face, trying to wake him up. She used her muzzle to nudge his head to the side in case he vomited. She kept snuffling him and whining, just waiting for him to wake up.

It was taking too long. Sam’s body was twitching and all she could do was watch. She wanted to curl up by his side like she did at night but the seizure was too violent. Deciding that more help was needed, she howled.

Dean heard an animal cry out just after he’d terminated the hell hound. The sound could have been going on for awhile. The damn hound made so much noise when it attacked. He shook the dirt off and scowled at the blood the hellhound had left on his jacket. He was looking for a place to burn the carcass when Sadie came running toward him.

He didn’t let her reach him. He took off in her direction. She turned and led the way back to Sam.

“Sammy!” Dean yelled as he ran. “Sammy!”

The dog heeled just out of reach of Sam’s flinging limbs.

“Oh, shit!” Dean stumbled to a stop. The seconds felt like hours until Sam’s shaking ceased. Immediately, Dean slid to his knees. He rolled Sam to his left side and ran his hands over Sam’s body, searching for any injures.

Sam gave a little moan before he vomited. Dean was ready and helped Sam stay on his side as he brushed his long hair out of his face.

“That’s it, Sammy. Come on back to me.” When the gagging ceased, Dean removed his coat and laid it across his brother. “I’m right here. I’m not going anywhere.”

Sadie, like the smart girl she was, laid alongside Sam, sharing her body warmth. She’d needed Dean’s help when the seizure lasted too long, but this part she knew. She’d never get used to seeing her owner helpless or Dean so worried. Still, she could provide what little comfort she could. She scooted closer to Sam, lifted her head, and stretched to lay it across Dean’s thigh. Dean reached down to pet her and she licked his hand.

“Good girl, Sadie,” his deep voice rumbled the praise she loved. “Sam’ll be fine. We just need to wait. You going to keep me company?”

Sadie sighed and closed her eyes.

They made a strange trio. A dog taking a catnap, a brother with his mind a million miles away and another man slowly making his way out of unconsciousness.

"Merry Christmas, Joey!" Dean entered their home with his arms overflowing with gifts. He set them down and swooped the little boy through the air until he giggled. He put him on his hip as he walked toward the living room. "Your parents at home, kid?"

Joey nodded eagerly. "They said you'd watch Frosty the Snowman with me."

"Oh, yeah?" Dean chuckled. Sam had told him about Joey's obsession with the cartoon. He knew Dean hated holiday shows. "He did, did he?"

"Yep. I've only watched it twice today. I was waiting for you." His big eyes shone with his honesty.

"I'm glad you waited," Dean lied. "You've been good this year? You expecting the big man in red?"

"Santa? Mommy took me to see him at the mall."

"Did you tell him what you wanted?"

"Yep. A toy truck that goes zoom, zoom." He imitated a motor and acted like he was running a Matchbox car on Dean's shoulder.

"That's how they go."

"Dean!" Sam came into the living room. "The munchkin attacked you already? I thought I told you to take it easy on Uncle Dean."

"I did, Daddy. I let him put down the presents before picking me up."

"Yeah, I guess that would qualify in your book." Sam held his arms out to take the boy but he clung to Dean. "How was the drive?"

"Luxurious, as always. You know my baby rides smooth." Dean gave Sam a smirk. "Now where's this awesome movie I've been hearing all about?"

Joey wiggled until Dean put him down. "I'll show you!" He happily ran to the television. "Can I put it in now?"

"Sure! I bet your dad is just dying to get us some snacks while we watch."

"Dean . . . " Sam warned. "He can't have too much sugar. He'll be bouncing off the walls."

"So? It's the afternoon. He has the whole day to run it off."

Sam raised an eyebrow, "Are you going to keep up with him?"

"I don't see why not," Dean shrugged. "I raised you."

"Sure, if you say so," Sam smiled as he turned to go to the kitchen. If only Dean knew how hellacious the sugar rush was going to be.

An hour later, Dean was ready to pull his hair out. They'd watched Frosty on a continuous loop since he'd arrived. Joey had downed a whole can of soda and over his half of a plate of cookies. Dean was just praying the kid didn't spew. He was jumping on the couch at the moment and Dean didn't think he'd have the energy to clean something like that up.

"Hey, hey," Dean reached out and made the boy stop jumping. "Why don't we do something fun?"

"Watch Frosty?" he suggested and took off toward the television.

"No, no, no," he picked the kid up to stop him from running. "I was thinking we could read a book instead."

"Books are boring."

"Yeah, but you haven't heard me read them. I do the voices."

"Really?"

Dean nodded. "Sure do. I wouldn't lie about something like that."

"Can I pick any story?"

"Sure." Dean set him down. "Go wild, kid. I can take anything you throw at me."

Joey ran past Sam in the doorway, almost knocking him over. The little burst of energy blew past and Jessica called after him to slow down.

"He's supercharged, Sammy. Why didn't you warn me?"

"You said you had it handled," Sam fought not to laugh. "Who am I to doubt Super Dean?"

"Whatever." Dean dismissed him. He heard Joey scampering from his room. "Get lost. You're too old for storytime."

Sam was still smiling on his way into the kitchen as he easily sidestepped the Tasmanian devil running towards him.

"I got three of them." The little guy's arms were full.

"What do we have here?" Dean took each book and read the title aloud as he set them aside. "Goodnight Moon, Runaway Bunny, and Bambi. Good choices. Which one do you want to read first?"

"Bunny." Joey clambered onto Dean's lap and made himself comfortable.

Sam listened to Dean's voice rumble through the house. The sound reminded him of the comics Dean used to read to him before bed. Sam got a warm feeling from the memory.

"The end." Dean closed the book. "Not bad. Want another book or do you want to play?"

"Trucks! I've got Tonka." He shot off Dean's lap to the basket filled with toy cars, trucks and other machines. "You can have this one," he handed Dean a black car. "It looks like yours."

"Yes, it does. That's pretty smart there for a five year old. Who usually plays cars with you?"

"Mommy or Daddy. But, you were wrong."

"About what?"

"I'm a big boy. I'm six, not five." Joey paid him no attention as he raced his toy around.

"Your dad said you were five the last time I came over."

"I had a birthday since then. Didn't you know?"

There were the words that made Sam clench the counter. He'd known there was no way he could really hide Joey's birthday if Dean stuck around, but he'd counted on him to be driven by hunting and rarely stop by.

"Let's chat," Dean's barely controlled rage seeped through into his words as his eyes shot daggers at Sam.

Sam nodded toward the front door and grabbed his coat. He called to Jessica that he and Dean were stepping out and heard her reply before leaving the house. He'd barely stepped clear of the door when Dean slugged him in the stomach. Gasping for air, he placed his hands on his knees and tried to breathe.

"Anything you want to tell me, Sammy?"

It took Sam a moment to be able to beg, "Dean . . ."

He stuck Sam one more time in the chest. "Anything pertaining to a certain fertility curse?"

"I wanted to tell you," Sam couldn't see through his tears.

"Why the hell didn't you? Didn't I deserve to know that I had a son? Do you hate me that much?"

"I don't hate you," Sam was shocked at Dean's conclusion. "I didn't want to be in your way. You've always been determined to hunt."

"Lame excuse, Sam. Know what happened after you left? We didn't know how long the effects of the spell would last."

"It should have stopped after succeeding once--"

"But I didn't know that it had, did I? I was terrified of what would happen if I hooked up with a girl and got her pregnant. I went and got fixed so I couldn't have kids. It was all for nothing! Not only did you take Joey away from me, you took away any future children, too!"

Sam didn't have the words to answer. His mind was awash with the guilt he felt for how much he had taken from Dean. He'd thought he'd done the right thing.

"What did you tell Jessica? Obviously it wasn't the truth, since she's been so nice. Did you tell her you slept with your brother? Did you explain hunting and break our rule? How, exactly, did you manage to get the normal life you craved while you left the past behind in shambles?"

"I picked up the phone so many times--"

"I called you! I remember calling all the time when you first moved, making sure that you were okay. I was worried about how you were and you lied to me!"

"Do you know what it was like, Dean? Have you thought about that? I was scared, alone and pregnant. I gave birth in a skuzzy apartment with only the knowledge I'd gleamed from the internet. I've worked damn hard to give Joey the best life possible!"

"I, I, I. Do you hear yourself? When did you become so self-centered, or did I just refuse to notice? Joey's best life was without me? "

"Decisions had to be made. I did the best I could under the circumstances."

"Not good enough. The only reason you're not beat to a pulp is because my son, whom I love dearly, calls you Daddy."

"Let me explain--"

"No. You've had enough time to explain on your own. Now we're doing it my way."

Sam swallowed, knowing he wasn't going to like where the conversation was going.

"I'm going to bond with my son. You take Jessica someplace and tell her."

"It's Christmas Eve!"

"I've lost six years of his life! Maybe Jessica will forgive you if she's in the holiday spirit."

***

Talking to Jessica went about as well as Sam expected. She left. Sam walked home slowly after she stormed off.

"Mommy! What's wrong?" Joey wanted to cry when he saw her so upset.

"Nothing, Joey." She gave him a watery smile. "Grandma needs me, so I'm going to her house."

"I want to come, too."

"No, baby." She gave him a hug and tried not to sob. "Grandma's sick and I don't want you to catch it. I'm going to make her chicken noodle soup."

"Can I send her a teddy to make her feel better?"

"Sure." Jessica watched the boy she considered her son go into his room. She turned to Dean and wiped her eyes, "I suppose I can't be mad at you for taking what wasn't mine in the first place."

"You have a right to be upset."

"I didn't know."

"I believe you."

"Will you love him?" her voice wobbles.

"I already do."

Before she could say anything else, Joey bounced back into the room. "Here, Mommy. Grammy will feel better with teddy to protect her."

"Yes, she will." Jessica choked on her words. "You be a good for Dean."

"Okay. Will you call to tell me goodnight?"

His question brought tears to Dean's eyes. Joey had no idea how much his life was going to change when Jessica walked out the door. Dean planned on going all her could to make it easier on Joey, but he was under no delusion that it would be simple.

"Sure, sweetie. Remember, Santa comes tonight."

"Will we set out cookies?"

"I'm sure Dean will help you. I have to go, honey." She lingered, savoring every last moment she had with him. Then, she nodded to Dean.

"Come on, kiddo. You ready to show me how to play your video game?"

Joey's eyes lit up as he seemed to forget all about Grandma being sick and Mommy going away.

Jessica watched them walk away. After they had started their game, the door clicked shut behind her.

***

Dean stayed in town. He worked odd jobs until he got on at the hardware store. The work was tedious and his missed hunting, but he loved Joey more.

He got a place within walking distance from Sam's house. One bedroom had just a bed in it. The other one was filled with everything Dean never had as a kid. There were pictures of Joey and Dean all over. There were none of Sam.

They worked their schedule out so that Joey stayed overnight at both houses. If there was ever a way that time couldn't be split evenly, Dean had the bigger half. Sam didn't complain because he'd had Joey the first six years.

Sam was not forgiven for what he'd done. Dean was civil to him and they got along for Joey's sake, but Sam had taken too much from Dean.

He'd had Dean's heart. He broke it when he took a baby and himself away. Dean couldn't chance losing anything more.
