So I went out and got an embroidery hoop, two actually, an oval and a circle, and got some nice smooth evenweave calico.
So far the calico is stretched on the hoop, and I've done the gesso.
So far, I think I will need 5 layers of gesso, the initial thick, the other four watered down. I'm pretty sure I've got it watertight, becasue I held it up to the lamp and kept layering the gesso untill I could see no tiny spots of light through it.
I was thinking of sanding it back, but I think that it should stay texturized. It doesnt have the tooth of canvas, and I doubt that this grade of thickness will have a detrimental effect on the overall detail. Its quite thin compared to any mediums I have used before.
So far my protracted and sometimes odd sense of logic seems to be working out.
