Because we got some super-awesome free tickets, and had a long weekend, Colin and I took the Amtrak Cascades train down to Portland!
It was my first real train-trip. And I must say, I quite enjoyed it.
Once we got to Portland, we met some of Colin's Hampshire friends went to a very nice pub, and stayed overnight in Lake Oswego with another friend. There was much geekery, including (of course) a trip to
Powell's City of Books where I bought Neil Gaiman's
Coraline (which is very good, even though it's a Young Adult book) and Colin bought about ten sci-fi books. We mostly just walked around and looked at things and took pictures. We had a nice sleepy train ride back into Seattle Sunday night.
I was impressed with Portland's transit system. Very easy to use. Also, their buildings are very pretty.
I was mad when Portland got ranked above Seattle for "Best U.S. Walking Cities" but now I understand... especially when one consider that the lack of hills makes Downtown Portland much easier to go about in than in Seattle, where the hills are crazily steep.
I still would rather live in Seattle, but kudos to Portlanders, you have a fine city.
Now I am back in Bellingham.
Which is pretty damn lame, but I only have 3ish weeks left here, so things are getting easier.
Anyway, I'm visiting Seattle again this weekend.
It's just better that way.
