Most of the first few hours of the hike are through high desert, it doesn't get nearly as much rain as the rest of the trail. The most amazing thing about the weather is that every hour or so of hiking you tend to enter a new climate zone:
People live and work in farms along the trail, here is another resident:
There tend to be a lot of pack and farm animals along the trail, especially on days 1 and 2.

The ruins at Llacta Pata. This was where we stopped for lunch on day 1. There is a high plateu that is formed by the intersection of 5 different valleys, making the location very important for defense. This was one of the locations Hiram Bingham "rediscovered" prior to Machu Picchu:
