Who: OPEN TO ANYONE WHO SHOWS UP FOR THE PICNIC Where: The Park?! When: 4th of July?! (starting it now so everyone has a chance to join in) Why: Because it's overdue. Rating: PG?! (to be determined)
Josuke wasn't about to pass up some free food. He put on his usual getup (something that was finally cleaned after his last fight) and headed down to the park. A couple of people had already arrived, so he walked on over and started to check out the spread. Of course, his outfit wasn't made for hot weather, so it didn't take long for the sweat to rear its ugly head.
Everything smelled fabulous. It had been so long since he had food like this, so he was going to stuff his face! Screw everyone else! Josuke grabbed a plate and headed on over to the grill. "Load it up, please."
Kaede smiled broadly at the young man's approach. Now this looked like someone who would appreciate some good, old fashioned, home cooking. Even if it was outdoor-style!
"Yes, sir!" she said, heaping his plate with a generous sampling of everything on the grill, bowing slightly out of habit as she gestured to the picnic table lined with okazu. Side dishes. "Please help yourself to anything else you would like!"
She was very pleased that people were turning out to the event after all.
"Thanks!" Josuke's eyes and mouth widened when he got his plate back. All this yummy stuff... he was going to need another plate. He put his full one down on a nearby table and grabbed an empty one for side dishes. It was like his dream come true: ENDLESS FOOD.
Now all he needed was some pretty ladies to look at and he was set. And Kaede was an excellent start. "You sure know how to work a grill."
Kaede nodded, smiling prettily at the compliment, with just a hint of mischief in her eyes as she began to juggle her chef knife and cooking utensils Teppanyaki style.
Catching them all neatly, she gave a traditional bow. "Thank you very much," she said, "I do my best." She wasn't exactly a professional chef, but knives were her specialty, and she'd had plenty of time lately to practice many different uses for them.
Wow. Josuke hadn't seen a chef perform like that in a while. Granted, he was used to chefs who could heal people by making them explode (where WAS Tonio, anyway...?), and while that was hard to top, Kaede definitely impressed him. He put his plate down and clapped.
"I can see that. I'm terrible in the kitchen. My mom used to kick me out the second I set foot in there. So I just stuck to making instant noodles and stuff."
Kaede bowed again, and again, hoping that the heat of the grill would hide the girlish blush that stole across her face at Josuke's applause. Outcast or no outcast, she still had her Iga-clan pride, and it had been a while since anyone had paid her such compliments. Well, except for the honor of being invited to Spekkio's fair City of Versus, of course.
She rather missed the camaraderie. "Tch," she said, "A man shouldn't live on noodles alone."
"That's why I love the food here. It reminds me of her cooking," Josuke said before digging into his plates. "Thith beaths noodleth any day!"
Everything tasted as awesome as it looked. The meat was unlike anything he had before, and the veggies were so flavorful! Once those two plates were polished off, Josuke had to return for more. He was a growing boy, after all.
When her guests started going back for seconds, Kaede finally laid her tools aside and slipped through the line to get a bit of something for herself.
"I hope you don't mind if I join you," she said, "I seem to have worked up an appetite." She smiled. "You're from Japan too, am I right?" Guessing from his clothes, he had either travele a bit, or he was from several centuries after her time.
Josuke began working on his second plate, only this time he was being more polite. In fact, he was using his utensils! He was in the presence of a lady, after all. An excited nod answered the young woman's question. "I was born and raised in the city of Morioh. I'm only half-Japanese, though."
Kaede smiled, bowing yet again as she took a seat. Quite honestly, it wouldn't have bothered if he'd been slurping the food down with his fingers. In fact, she'd taken his earlier gusto as a great compliment. It was just another part of the culture in her day and age.
"Ah, so! I was raised in Mie-ken, among the Iga," she said, speaking of her ninja clan. "But that was a long time ago. I've traveled a great deal since then--though never quite as far as this."
She paused, taking a sip of iced tea as she watched him. "Do you miss it, back home, Josuke-san?"
"Yeah... I sort of do," Josuke finally admitted. "Tonio's a friend of mine from back home, so that helped a bit. But I miss my mom and Oku and Koichi and Rohan... okay I don't miss Rohan all that much. Still though, I'm glad I came here." He slowed down his eating a little more.
"I got to meet all sorts of cool people, and eat great food!" He devoured the rest of his roasted meat. "I think one more plate will tide me over."
Kaede nodded. "I miss home a little, too, sometimes," she said, though she didn't miss having to fight the undead demon genma everywhere she went. "It has been a nice change of pace here."
She grinned. He ate like a samurai. "Please, enjoy!" she said, "Just don't forget to save room for dessert."
Dessert?! Josuke smiled again when Kaede said that. "You bet I will! What's for dessert?" He didn't see anything sweet other than some fruit, so maybe it was being kept a secret from everyone. Still, even if that were the case, Josuke would try to pry it out of the chefs.
"Yes," Kaede replied, smirking wickedly in the face of Josuke's excitement. Now he reminded her of the Tengu that were rumored to have allied with Samanosuke's Ogre clan. She'd never seen one, but she'd heard stories of their zest.
"We couldn't let it sit out," she hinted, tapping the ice chest she was sitting on at her end of the picnic table. "Even Lulu's blizzard magic would only keep from melting for so long."
"Blizzard magic?" Josuke cocked an eyebrow. Did Lulu have an ice stand, like that annoying bird he heard about from his dad and Jotaro? Of course, neither man actually saw the bird, only heard about it. Something like that. Josuke returned to the present when he looked over at the ice chest. "Ooooh a frozen treat, then. I can't wait!"
"Mhm," Kaede nodded, glancing over at the black mage and the swordsman. She would never admit it, but their camaraderie made her homesick for her samurai partner who'd gone missing some time before Kaede had come to Versus.
She laughed it off easily, though. Josuke was good company. "Blizzard magic," she repeated, "Did you see her fights? I've heard she's mistress of the four elements: thunder, water, fire and ice."
