Character Name: Fuuma Monou
Fandom: X/1999
Gender: Male
Age: 17
Sexuality: Bisexual
Alternate Universe
Appearance: For a Japanese teenager,
Fuuma is fairly tall for his age, reaching the upper bounds of 5’10” or so. His eyes are of a golden color, but they’re usually hidden behind various pairs of sunglasses. They are also known to glow when he is either angered or using his powers. His hair is somewhat messy, bangs hanging into his eyes.
His body’s fairly toned, but not overly muscular, mostly from playing basketball in high school. He wears fairly casual outfits most of the time, although lately he seems to have a penchant for wearing trenchcoats.
Personality: Fuuma is a kind, if somewhat aloof, teenager. He’s always willing to help someone else in need, offering them a smile and encouraging words at the very least. He has had a compulsion and urge to protect those closest to him from an early age, ever since he saw his little sister Kotori traumatized by their mother’s bloody death trying to bring the first Shinken into the world.
Despite his aloof nature, he is fairly well-liked by his peers and classmates, and is friendly enough to them. After Kotori was killed, however, he withdrew; refusing help from anyone, even his allies within the Ten no Ryuu. But thanks to Sorata and Yuzuriha especially, he has shown vestiges of his old self, even laughing at Sorata’s lame jokes again.
There is another side to Fuuma’s personality that not many have or will see if he has anything to say about it. He has an incredible temper; especially where the people he cares about is concerned. The prime example of this would be after Kotori’s death. He was (and still is, to be honest) furious with Kamui, so much so that he was willing to kill him if only for the fact that he had betrayed them and killed his sister. This has softened considerably, but he doesn’t let these kind of things go that easily. He put Kotori first and foremost in his life; losing her was a major blow to his ego. Fuuma does not take betrayal lightly, and is somewhat impulsive when it comes down to the subject. He’s more likely to attack someone than go asking questions as to why he was betrayed.
History: “I’ll be whatever the world needs me to be.”
Fuuma had a fairly normal life for quite a while, growing up with his mother, father, and younger sister in the Togakushi Shrine in Tokyo. When he was about nine, he met Kamui Shirou, who’s mother happened to be an old high school classmate of their mother’s. They all lived peacefully together until Kotori and Kamui were about nine years old. It was at that time that his mother died. But it was not a normal death, it was so that the Sacred Sword was born. Kamui and his mother fled to Okinawa before Saya’s funeral, leaving Kotori and Fuuma behind.
Fuuma and Kotori, despite being sad that their friend had left, continued on with their lives. Kotori, however, was severely traumatized by the event, that, coupled with her already weakened heart, made it hard for both Fuuma and their father to take care of her. But even so, Fuuma was able to live a mostly normal life, even gaining a position on the basketball team in high school.
Six years later, in 1999, Kamui has returned to Tokyo, two weeks after his mother had mysteriously burned to death in their home, telling him with her dying breath to return to Tokyo and that “his destiny was waiting”. He doesn’t even regard Fuuma or Kotori when he meets up with them, preferring to be distant in order to try and keep them from becoming involved with the events to come surrounding the End of the World. Fuuma tries to make him open up a bit more, but to no avail.
However, with Kamui’s return to the city, things started to get serious, quick. The Shinken (which was being protected at the Togakushi Shrine) was stolen, and that Mr. Monou was hospitalized. However, he was able to deliver one last message to Fuuma: warning him of his fate as Kamui’s Twin Star. Stunned, Fuuma didn’t know what to think of this, and by the time he had realized what his father had meant, it was too late.
Fuuma meets up with Kamui shortly after the latter and Kotori were attacked by Seishirou Sakurazuka (one of the Dragons of Earth; those that were trying to destroy humanity in order to let the Earth restart, as it were), and the two take Kotori back to their place and let her rest for the time being after she has a small fainting spell. The two boys talk for a little while before Tokiko Magami, Kamui’s aunt, shows up, critically injured. Fuuma tries to get her to a hospital, but she brushes him off, telling Kamui (and Fuuma, who was standing right next to them) about the Shinken and what truly happened on the day of Saya Monou’s death. Fuuma’s too stunned to speak, and watches as Tokiko goes through the same bloody ceremony, her body ripped apart as she gives birth to the second Shinken. Kamui takes the sword, stunned.
Kamui and Fuuma then take Kotori (who has gone into a state of shock from seeing Tokiko’s corpse), along with the Chairman of CLAMP Academy and his subordinates to the campus, where Tokiko has a video prepared for Kamui. She advises him to think about what he wants for the Earth, and what he wants to protect. Fuuma watches this happen, his father’s words running through his head.
It’s at this point the story changes.
Instead of choosing to fight for a world where “Kotori and Fuuma can live happily ever after”, which translated to Kamui turning into the Dragon of Heaven (Ten no Ryuu), he decides that it’s too late for humanity to stop itself, and even though he cares deeply for Kotori and Fuuma, he knows that it will only be a matter of time before humanity exhausts itself.
And so his decision was made, the die was cast.
Kamui decided to become the Chi no Ryuu, the Dragon of Earth. He quickly used his telekinetic powers to shatter the structures around him, creating rubble to pin Fuuma down while he created a cross out of the wreckage, much like the one that Kamui, Kotori and Fuuma had all seen in their recent dreams. It was during this that Fuuma watched with wide eyes as Kamui impaled Kotori with the Shinken, instantly killing her.
Helpless until the other Ten no Ryuu had made it to the scene, Fuuma felt something that he never thought he could feel: pure, unadulterated rage toward Kamui for what he had just pulled. All he could think about during his recovery was how he was going to make sure that Kamui would pay for what he had done.
However, fate would have some different plans for him. Thanks to one Sorata Arisugawa, who he had actually met beforehand, he slowly learned how to laugh again. It was like magic, almost: within a week, Fuuma was almost back to his normal self. He wasn’t sulking in his room, making plans on how he was going to make sure that Kamui would never harm anyone else again. But that didn’t mean the thoughts weren’t still there.
He quickly made friends within his allies, earning their trust and support as both teammates and friends. In particular, he bonded well with Sorata and Daisuke Saiki, a windmaster and guardian to the Dreamseeing Princess, Hinoto.
Things went well for a little while longer, until the gears of fate started to turn again. It was during this time that the others found out about Fuuma’s other ability: to grant the deepest wishes within a person’s heart. It came as a weird impulse at first, he would do whatever he could to help the others with their fights, but when it came down to a fight where he would end up nearly throwing his life away, Fuuma was involved in many bloody battles, and lost some of his allies in the process. Saiki was decapitated by Kamui while trying to protect Hinoto, Karen sacrificed herself taking down Yuuto Kigai to protect Aoki and his family, and Subaru… well, nobody was sure what he was going to do after he had killed Seishirou at the Rainbow Bridge.
Sad enough to say, the Ten no Ryuu weren’t looking so hot. But they gained help from an unexpected source: a former Chi no Ryuu that was getting sick and tired of the pointless battles and decided to give them a bit of intelligence on the situation. The man’s name was Shiyuu Kusanagi, an officer within the Japanese Defense Force. He was able to tell the Ten no Ryuu where exactly the base of operations was for the Chi no Ryuu as well as their order of where they were going to attack and destroy the natural kekkai around Tokyo. The group started preparing for the worst; but they were actually able to hold off the Chi no Ryuu for a while.
Things were looking up, until Fuuma, Sorata, and Aoki figured out that Hinoto wasn’t exactly acting like herself. The three men decided to investigate this further, but weren’t able to draw any concrete conclusions from it. It wasn’t until Arashi had gone missing and Sorata had sent his own summon elemental to keep an eye on her that they figured out the truth: that Hinoto was currently being possessed by her “dark side”, which wanted to kill all the Ten no Ryuu before “Kamui” was to come and kill her. Furious, Sorata went after Arashi while Aoki, Yuzuriha, and Fuuma headed for Tokyo Tower to settle things with the Chi no Ryuu once and for all.
Strengths: Thanks to his position as the “Kamui” of the Ten no Ryuu, Fuuma is one of the few people that can wield the sacred sword “Shinken” (or loosely translated as “Divine Sword”) and summon its divine lightning properly. Also because he is involved with the End of the World, he has increased speed, stamina and strength (read: rooftop hopping, regeneration rate, etc.). His specific ability is not only manipulation of matter (Telekinesis), but also a compulsion to grant the true wishes of those around him. Thanks to some training from Subaru and the others, he has learned to hold this compulsion in a bit. But one thing he cannot help, however, is the fact that at random times, he will briefly look like or remind someone of the person they care about the most.
Psychologically, Fuuma’s pretty stubborn, if he thinks that someone needs his help, then dammit, he’s going to help regardless. He wants to have deep connections with people, as much as he knows it might not be a good idea, considering the current track record of the participants of the End of the World. He also has a fairly strong sense of justice, if something’s wrong, he’ll try to help fix it. It doesn’t point due north, but Fuuma will do whatever he can to try and make things right.
Weaknesses: Physically, it’s hard to damage Fuuma, but despite his position, he’s still only human. He bleeds like anyone else, but his tolerance for pain is extremely high; it will take a lot to make him cringe. He’s experienced great amounts of pain, but despite his pain tolerance, he can be killed in normal fashions: shot, stabbed, etc. But in that case, it will take more than what it does to kill a normal human to do any critical damage to him.
Psychologically, on the other hand, Fuuma suffers from a severe hero complex. He will easily throw himself in the face of danger in order to make someone else happy, especially if it happens to be their wish. His wish-granting ability, although partially under control, still flares up from time to time, especially when he’s around people that have extremely strong wishes. He tries to think things through, especially after what had happened to the others, but he still impulsively does things before thinking, making it harder for him to be able to fully understand the situation and sometimes making it worse.
He also hates the fact that he was basically the shadow of his best friend, forced to take whatever side Kamui was going to oppose. He knows full well that means that he would become what Kamui is today if he hadn’t chosen what he had, and the fact of that scares him.
