I tap my fingers on the countertop impatiently. I'd been hoping we'd have heard something about Kennedy's comings and goings by now, but the calls have all been regular jobs. I'm starting to wonder if we should widen the search perimeter. Melaka seems about as antsy as I am with the situation.
"There's got to be some way to smoke her out of hiding," I say, but we just don't have enough information for that.
“She’ll show ‘erself, eventually. They always make that mistake”. I’m tryin’ to do a one-handed handstand on an odd shaped chair in the middle o’ the room, so’s I’m not much for conversation, but I try. “Speakin’ of women, who’s the brown-haired woman I been seein’ ‘round ‘ere lately? Haven’t had much courage ta talk to her. She’s got an air o’ authority like someone who was rich once. She live in the uppers and get lost or somethin’?”
I can't help but smile a little at that. "Something like that," I say, remembering how Cordy had been in high school, like she owned the whole world. She still had that old confidence, even if her mission in life had changed. "That's Cordy--uh, Cordelia Chase. She's...uh, very special. Gets visions when people are in serious trouble." And always seems to know when to hit me upside the dead before I do something stupid.
“Visions?” I flip ov’r the chair and land on ma feet near the front desk. “Hunh, like seein’ it before it happens?” I may be a lil’ slow when it comes ta these things, but I get tha general idea. “Toy, sounds like an interestin’ power. Is it somethan she can control, or-?” Truthfully, I ain’t all interested, but it helps to know what the others are capable of. Like Oz. Or Woody. “She handle ‘erself well in a fight?”
"No, they pretty much come when the Powers That Be want to send 'em, unfortunately. But she's pretty damn good in a fight, Cordy is," I say. All that confidence isn't for nothing, you don't run into someone as Cordelai every day. I don't mention the times she'd done that glowy thing, because honestly, I don't think she can control that either.
Powers that be? I’ve heard mention o’ ‘em before. They basically control ev’rything from afar. Not that I’m complainin’, mind, but a vision now would hurt none. “Good to know”, I say af’er a moment. “Next time I see ‘er, I’ll bit a lil’ more sociable”, I hop onto one foot an’ start stretchin’. It ‘elps to be prepared.
"Do that," I say with a nod. "I think you two would like each other." They're both straightforward, pull no punches women, I could see them getting on really well.
I glance around, wondering...well, where everyone is? Out on jobs? I guess there had been a few calls for people to cover.
