As I was driving to school on Monday, there was a piece on the news about parents complaining about the use of red pens by teachers. Many parents say that corrections and answers mark wrong in red pen (compared to other colors) are hurting their children’s feelings. The poor children… wait if they got the answer wrong why should they not feel bad. The story went on to say that many pen manufacturers have been making a lot more purple pens. How can you say it is the color that is making the student feel bad it is the fact that they got the answer wrong.
Purple is said to be the new red for teachers, it is more soothing on the eyes and doesn’t give out a sense of failure at first glance. What? If you just bombed a test or failed a quiz I think the point of the teacher marking your answers up in red to tell you, dude you just failed, should be seen at first glance. This same group of parents is saying that pastels work just as well as purple, it is a more friendly and happy color. What the? Come on people this is school you were not sent here to feel happy, you have to achieve happiness by staying up all-night and studying for those tests and quizzes. If you don’t want your English paper all marked up, than double check it, proof read it, and then you yourself will find those errors.
I have noticed many of my teachers do not use red pens when correcting papers. Some do use purple some use pastels, and some use what ever type of writing utensil is in their hand at the time, weather it be pen, pencil, marker, or crayon. The point is more that they correct the work so that you know what you did wrong and can learn from it. I am not a teacher but I have a feeling that they are not using red just to make you feel bad.
I personally work off the sticker system, at least for Math anyway. In eighth grade if you got higher than a 75 you got a sticker. Last year the grade was an 80 or over. This year it is a 90 or more, I strive for a sticker; at age 18 and in my junior year of high school I am still doing my best just to get a sticker. If I do not get that sticker than I expect to see red marks all over my paper so I know right away what I did wrong.
Parents that feel red is making their kids sad, will later realize they need to spend more time helping those kids study instead of yelling at the teachers for what color pen they used to correct the work.
