Mod Post: Tagging Update

Jan 20, 2008 23:06

As some of you may have heard, LJ recently made it so that users and communities cannot have more than 1000 tags. For those accounts that already had more than 1000 tags, no new tags were allowed to be created at that point.

As some of you may also have figured out, we had a lot more than 1000 tags. 1393, to be precise.

After some tag pruning, we're now at 925.

All tags that had never been used were deleted. This included a variety of tags from different categories: some characters, some pairings, some authors, etc. We can always recreate tags (to a limited extent), and so long as those weren't being used anyhow, we just removed those.

All "Challenge response - **challenge**" were deleted. [i.e. "challenge response - vm_have_a_day"] Most challenges have a community or journal where they are centered, so all fics written for a specific challenge should be able to be found there. The generic "challenge response" tag remains for more basic separation.

All pairing tags were deleted. This was more for sake of volume than anything else. All Casey/Veronica fics should also be tagged with Casey and Veronica. However, not all fics about Casey would be tagged with Casey/Veronica. This keeps all fics tagged and organizable in some way, while cutting down on about a hundred tags.

Multi-part tags with minimal parts/uses were deleted. At this time, all such tags with two or fewer uses were deleted - again, to make room for new tags. We are certainly willing to create/recreate tags for this category, as requested/needed, but when room for new tags is needed, this is the category that will be purged from first. We hope to keep the larger multi-part pieces tagged, but - again - some of that depends on how many new writers, etc., that we have joining our community in the next ... however long.

We'll be making a "tagging request" post in the next few days, to try to make things simpler for all of us. And, of course, if you guys have any questions at all about tagging [or anything!] you can feel free to comment or else email sarah_p or myself. [both of our email addresses are in the community userinfo :)]

Finally, as a reminder from both Sarah and myself - please, PLEASE read the userinfo and make sure that all the required parts of your header are included before you post. We've been rejecting a number of posts recently for incomplete headers and for lacking LJ-cuts. Both are essential and required here, so please make sure that you include both.
