MOD POST: Tagging Priortizing

Aug 04, 2007 13:25

I'd like to start this post by saying that I really hope that we never need to do away with any of our tags. I love them all, and I think they are all absolutely fabulous.

However, in the past, other communities have been [temporarily] suspended for having too many tags, which puts "too much strain" on the LJ servers. The only way to get the journal unsuspended - from what I've been told by the mods of those communities - is to remove many of their tags.

As a community, we have in the neighborhood of 1400 tags.

It appears that they're going through the list of communities alphabetically, and since V is near the end of the alphabet, hopefully this won't be an issue for quite awhile yet. Still, so long as I have my mod hat on right now, I figured it wouldn't be a bad idea to poll it up and see what you all think.

Two tags that will not be removed [unless we literally have no other option, per LJ's head honchos] are the author tags and the multi-part tags. If an author doesn't have an archive of their fic anywhere else on LJ, that makes it easy to find more pieces by a newly discovered favorite author. Same goes for multi-part fics - if the author doesn't have them collated in their memories [or if the memories feature isn't working for whatever reason], it's an easy way to pull up all the chapters of a given piece.

Poll

Before sarah_p and I make any wholesale changes to the tags, we'll definitely make another post, but I just figured this might be a good exploratory way of getting this started. The one bad thing about adding new tags at this point is that we have so many posts that would need to be retagged. Sarah will probably want to do that herself, but we may need some extra help from the community.

The poll below is not binding in any way, shape, or form. Still, I figured so long as I'm talking about this, it couldn't hurt to ask.
