So New York fell through. So your dad prefers a giant suitcase of money to a week in the Big Apple with his daughter. So what. That’s life, isn’t it? Haven’t you gotten used to disappointment by now?
You do your best to keep a smile on your face - partly for your dad’s sake, partly because you’re pretty sure that otherwise you’ll go crazy. You spend some time with Logan, but not too much time, because he’s got his own problems to worry about.
One time, two weeks after your dad stood you up at the airport, you climbed into Logan’s ugly yellow X-Terra, strapped the seatbelt on and, without even saying hello, turned to him and stated petulantly, “I can’t believe my dad stood me up.”
Without missing a beat, he’d answered, “I know. I can’t believe that my dad fucked and murdered my girlfriend. Oh, and I can’t believe my mom took a swan dive off the Coronado Bridge. And I can’t believe that -“
“Okay,” you’d responded with a sigh. “I get it. Your life sucks.”
With that, he’d leaned over the seat and planted a soft kiss on your lips and smiled. “Not at the moment, it doesn’t.” And you’d had a picnic on the beach and he’d bought you ice cream and you went for a walk, and you let yourself forget about how the summer hadn’t exactly turned out the way you’d planned it to.
But forgetting isn’t something that happens often. Every morning you wake up and remember that you’re still in Neptune, that Wallace is still at the basketball camp for Hearst, and that your dad still won’t tell you anything about that suitcase full of money.
You kind of can’t wait for school to start, even if you are going to Hearst. Even if you are staying in Neptune. Even if you will be living at home.
The faster the summer ends, the faster you’ll get away from here. And that idea makes you happy even as you relax with Logan on the beach.
