Reports have confirmed that authorities are rounding up gay men in Chechnya and detaining them in concentration-type camps (I use "type" because I hesitate to invoke the full force of the term given what they were 80 years ago; but they might be for all I know). Good sources are cited here

I wander away for a while, and I come back to find that Russians have bought LJ. Um, why? It's a dying platform, people go straight to tumblr, twitter, and FB nowadays. Nevertheless, I like your style.

I may well finally get a DW account though, because some of the closest friends I have here are going over there. And I kind of fear the whole site going belly up and it would suck to lose my
journal, even if I don't post here anymore.

And the horror in Chechnya is making me sick, and so furious that we have a President that doesn't give a shit about human rights. If Obama was still here, he might lean on Russia a bit, at least shame them a little. He might respond to pressure from US gay rights groups protesting this crisis. But now Putin can do what he wants, which was the whole point. The U.S. has the clout to make a real statement on this, and we've completely vacated our leadership role in the world. Not that I'm into our policy of interference, but at least we might (rather hypocritically, to be sure) say something about global human rights -- this is clearly ott horrific. Now there's a vacuum as other first world democracies figure out wtf to do about Trump and how to rearrange things for this new world order.
