Pretty Woman

It's on cable tonight, so I was going back and forth between it and something else, mostly watching Pretty Woman though. There might be some of you reading this who weren't born when this movie came out; definitely some of you who were just little kids. 1990 was the same year I started college, and this came out on video later the same year it came ( Read more... )

I find it one of the sexist movies ever made. Even the title makes my blood boil. And yes the acting is quite good.

I think the acting is what makes it bearable; it sure isn't the story. It's filled with excellent and decent actors, including a number of older character performers.

But yes, the story. Setting the movie itself and its problems aside, the ending is ... well, a non-ending, really. What happens after? The guy's divorced one woman and broken up with at least two others. So it's not going to happen again? I bet it will. The only thing I can gather from this is she could use her time with him to get some formal education so she doesn't have to go back to turning tricks when it inevitably ends, and can take care of herself. Anyway.

Well, it was based on My Fair Lady, which was based on Pygmalion, so there is that...

I was never a big fan of MFL. Pygmalion, I felt, was a different kind of story and I liked it - bringing a creation to life, rather than trying to pretty-package someone who's already living and has a personality.

I actually don't think I've seen it since early TV showings. Although I had quite the teenage crush on Julia, I vaguely remember being put off by the prostitution theme (I read a few articles about it). It was all just too sordid for dreamy adolescent me.

I'm not really of an of any movie being made, particularly if it's only come out within the last 30 years or so. Many of them (Footloose, Fame, for example) don't do as well as their original counterparts.
