Death ... and fun

Apr 29, 2011 03:48

The death toll keeps mounting in the storm-stricken South. If you haven't been through a tornado, you cannot imagine the fear that funnel inspires. I feel badly for everybody who had to go through it.

ETA: Of course, anyone who's been through a damaging earthquake, tsunami, or hurricane can relate to the tornado thing. I didn't mean to minimize anyone who's been through another kind of extreme storm.

On the opposite end ... when I was 8, Mom was 29, and she woke me at 2 am to watch Diana's wedding. I drank hot chocolate and tried valiantly not to fall asleep, since I never got to keep those hours. I remember the bright colors and coverage on TV and the dresses - I never wanted to be a princess, but I loved the clothes (hence my Barbie collection). So here we are almost 30 years later - Mom is gone, but she would've gotten a kick out of the coverage and out of the young couple, who seem far more laid back than his parents. I'm no Anglophile, and it's not my country, so I will express no opinion on the cost or the existence of monarchy; I'll just say the couple seem friendly and decent, do good works for charities apparently, and it's kind of nice to see ... oh, I don't know, celebrities who seem OK. An old cynic like me needs a fun break from real news once in a while.

I still think it'd all be about 43 times better if the couple were traveling via Bentley with Chris Barrie driving.

Now, Americans don't get bank holiday, so I'm off to bed. I'll let the DVR and FF feature show me the rest of BBCA coverage later after work. ;-)

ETA2: Courtesy of a few people pointing it out - everything deserves a good parody. ;-)
