Money Matters (Spoilers for 2.04 "Green Eyed Monster" & Speculation for the Season)

So this is my weekly look at how the arc is shaping up so far.

We are four episodes into the season and three of the episodes have had a similar theme:

Daddy isn't who you think he is.

In 2.02 Jessie's father wasn't suicidal, he was in love with another woman.
In 2.03 Big Dick wasn't a wealthy successful real estate tycoon, he was a crook.
In 2.04 Wallace's dad isn't dead, he is the well known undercover cop who has been skulking around the neighborhood.

Some reactions:
Way to leave Beaver and Dick hanging out in the breeze.
Seems Alicia/Cher has a thing for men in law enforcement.

It is interesting that they are treading this route again as part of last season covered exactly the same themes Dad's really a woman, Dad is not really your Dad (x2 for Mac and Veronica), Dad is cheating on Mom, and, of course, Dad is a murdering sociopath who boffed and offed your girlfriend.

Let's just say fathers aren't doing too well here.

Of course, mothers are no prize either *cough* Lianne *cough* (and let's not touch Lynne or Celeste here).

But Daddies seem to be the focus thus far (add to the mix Jackie's previously absentee father and Gia's dad). Now this could be misdirection, but it is interesting.

It works well with my theory that Big Dick Casablancas might be trying to off his kids for an insurance payment. Daddy doesn't really love you. And it might be nice timing because we think that we are done with Big Dick (he has had his mystery), but it all comes back to haunt us.

As to who could have made the call from the Echoll's place. Well, Veronica said it was from a number she didn't recognize (nice creepy shout out to the pool house there Logan), but could it have been Kendall? I know he said that the caller was male, but, hmmm...

Notice Weevil didn't explain the meeting with Curly at the Roadhog.

Important points in the episode:

"Money Matters":
The reason that Servando can't be the target of the murder.
The reason that the MoTW couple fails.
Why Wallace leaves Jackie to help Veronica.
The reason Veronica takes the case.

Maybe:
An element in her relationship with Duncan?
Foreshadowing the fate of the Casablancas boys?

"You both wanted to be sure that you were loved for who you really were, and it seems that one of you was.":
Breaks up the MoTW couple.

Maybe:
Foreshadowing the relationship of the main characters.
Let's play a game. Who is loved for who they really are and who loves an illusion.
Keith and Alicia
Wallace and Jackie
Veronica and Duncan

My guess is that, in the last case, it may turn out to be Veronica who loves Duncan not for who he really is, but for what he represents to her.

We got some foreshadowing of this in this episode when we saw again Duncan's tendency to avoid and evade confrontation (like the breakup, like the morning after) and to stonewall. And Veronica, who seems comfortable confronting Logan, is unwilling to press Duncan. She is holding on to her illusion.

Not that I am convinced that Duncan really loves Veronica, or at least not Veronica as the person she wants to be. But I don't think he is really carrying a torch for Meg. I think she is more a sister-substitute than anything and he is terrified that he failed another young blond. Mostly because a hidden Meg/Duncan romance as a reason for breaking up V/D is just, well, boring.

Anyway. I like how things are shaping up.
