Official Recap Video Contest!

Oct 12, 2006 13:35

Is anyone working on any recap videos for this contest? No one seems to have uploaded anything yet, and I think that's sad. These guys are doing a lot of work to give VM an online presence, and I don't want them to get discouraged due to low response. If you have any ideas and the time to make a vid, please make one! It will be fun!

There are plenty of recap vids being done on YouTube. Is that the same thing!

No, those are great, but they use footage from the show and therefore are technically illegal. The Veoh channel, MySpace, and podcast pages are official (run by people who work on the show), but they're not network-related, so footage from the show is not allowed. They're asking the fans to be more creative about recapping episodes. These official channels are ones that they and we can more effectively promote in public places BECAUSE they're not so illegal. The major media, for instance, can link to this stuff, but they're not going to be linking to YouTube recaps.

Aww... it'd be funny to do it MST3K style. Grrr for not being able to use footage. Although, that would actually make it funny because it could be, "This movie sucks, let's pretend it's this week's episode of Veronica Mars instead." Now, if I could just find something I could use that would work.

Hee! That's probably illegal too, as it's copyrighted material, but it's not...illegal in a way that the network/studio cares about.

Frankly, I do think that's probably not acceptable.

There are some movies that are in the public domain, I believe. I recall there being some here: http://www.jonhs.net/freemovies/

I didn't mean using actual MST3K footage. I meant re-creating the same theater/TV viewing with the backs of heads commenting on what they are watching. It's what's on the TV that would make it copyrighted.. but that's what I meant when I said it'd have to be something that could work. Like a powerpoint show with drawings of what happened on the episode or maybe someone acting out what happened.

Oh, good! I just keep checking, waiting for something to go up. I can't imagine how they must feel.

Well, heh, I know EXACTLY how they feel, which is why I want to people to upload stuff! Soon! This is a fun idea that can lead to really creative videos.

You know, if you have any contact with these guys, you might want to manage their expectations somewhat, because this is a very difficult challenge, and the lack of response is more an indication of the degree of difficulty than it is of interest. There are many vidders who would do awesome recaps with show footage, and while it's understandable that this is technically illegal, it's almost silly to have a challenge where you can't. It's better to have nothing than one that looks like a failure, particularly with the unknown state of the future of the show.

Yeah I concur. What the heck are you supposed to use, little stick figure drawings?

Sure, why not? Have fun with it! Draw scenes in crayon and explain them. Make a cartoon. Act out the episode in really bad wigs. Give a really snarky PowerPoint slide presentation. The whole point is to be creative.
