"You've never done this before?" Veronica smiled up at him as she knelt by the red-velvet tree skirt. "Ever?"
"Never," Duncan said. His mother paid people to set up the tree; when he was small and tried to touch the glittering, fragile ornaments, she would slap his hand.
"There's an art to this," Mr. Mars said. He gave Duncan a frosted globe with the Padres symbol in glitter. "Hang that one front and center."
Later that night, Duncan downloaded the Cold Miser song from iTunes and tried to memorize the words. Maybe he could sing it with them next year.
