Still in the period of tweaking and finishing, finding the things that make it a project unfinished. I'm not someone who wants to keep on fiddling with a vehicle, I want to be able to consider it a usable appliance.
Oh the excitement of taking the van back in for its alignment with proper big sized wheels!
Oh, the horror and disappointment, as the ham fisted sonofabitch doing it let the eccentric washer on the caster adjusting pin escape the guide ring and bent it even more than it was by tightening it up hard after cranking it so that the hole in the still-captive washer on the other side got its flat side rounded out.
See the pin in a position slid to the outer of the arm mount slot, while turned as though at the inner position.
On the other side, the washer in the outer position, but the bolt turned for inner thus wrecking the washer hole edge.
So I replaced it with another one, and here I am TAKING THE PRESSURE OFF THE BOLT WITH A CROWBAR AND THUS TURNING IT WITH MY FINGERS.
Sorted.
The munted washers.
Bought a small MIG welder from REPCO and built up the washer edge, filed it out flat again. (Partway through)
It works fine. Better than it was before. Probably harder too. Straightened the bent one in the vice.
Then I noticed the slight split in the CV boot, just starting to leak grease when it is rotated at high speed.
Cock. and. Arse.
It's small, against a solid metal bit, spray it clean, superglue and tape. Also, run the front hubs in the unlocked position so it doesn't spin. That will do until I feel like installing the spare boot.
Yeah, now there are some cosmetic issues, and the damp carpet out of the other one makes a good template for some new front floor lining, for style and for deadening of road noise.
Not quite the success I was expecting. Never mind, that rug came from the tip ages ago and I had to waterblast it. I'll fix it up with something just plain dark colour.
Took the van for a drive to the Bunnings, picked up a 24-inch hedge trimmer to do my blackberry for the next phase of the life project which is clean up the section. This will cut up to 1 inch sticks. The van drove like a workhorse. Not much more to do till I can forget about it, gearbox needs additive.
I did everything on this job with my own hands, everything, with the exception of the wheels and tyres. Even the wheel alignment I had to finish myself, and since I knew it needed 3 degrees caster and it was handed back to me with 4 degrees negative on the one remaining measurement, not hard to guess at where it should be set to.
