We've been in Portland for almost 9 months. Last week we closed on a house, which is significant because the housing market out here is super crazy expensive. But buying is cheaper than renting, becasue the rental market is even worse than buying. Congrats on the house! I'm surprised it's cheaper than renting -- most of the cities I've looked at with crazy-expensive houses have had less crazy rental rates. (Y'know, still double what you'd pay in KC, but not 5-10 times).

We will be saving $500-700 a month owning over renting. The city has ant-sprawl legislation that keeps housing at a premium, plus it's a very popular place to move right now. On the good side, it means our house will be increasing in value for the foreseeable future. 15 years ago the house could have been purchased for under $100k, possibly under $50k, but you also wouldn't have wanted to live in the neighborhood back then either.
