History of Vietnam +
Hetalia info As canon history [and personality even] for all characters are interpreted from history and culture, here it is in wordy summary:
Vietnam was once a small nation, situated in the South East border of Asia, and her own identity, though history writes it to be thousands of years far back, was not quite fully shaped. When did she first step foot, when was her first memory? She remembered confusion, wars every which way, and then moments of peace where she could wander on her own. But she will always remember that her life began independently, and that has been carved into her national soul so deeply, that even to this very day, she will do everything to keep it. But sometimes one cannot grow independently, and then she met China. Typically, like China did with most of his siblings, she was taken into his family and raised up. China raised her like he did all his siblings, like a father, he made sure that he taught them everything he knew in hopes that it will help them grow like he did. However, Vietnam, despite wanting to learn, had always wanted to be self-sufficient and independent, and she wanted her own identity, not one completely influenced by China. But with her young age and lack of experience of the world, there was little chance of being able to go out into the world. Her defiance eventually lead to her leaving China's house many times, but he also brought her back in again with his power alone. Eventually, she was finally able to break free of China's grasp, and started her life on her own. But then it took a different turn.
France took over parts of Asia to form the French Indochina, and one of the nations he took under his wing was Vietnam, along with Laos and Cambodia. It was not so bad at first; the freedom she wished for was never achieved, but as tough as life was, her new father figure brought new knowledge. Though years past and she began to learn more about the French way of life, as well as a world outside of Asia, and she took these in. Once again, she did not want her self to be a copy of France, but to write her own identity. With everything she learnt from China and France, she took the best of everything to help her progress, and the hunger to be independent grew; the time was almost just right to achieve it.
World War was brewing, and Japan wanted his siblings on his side, and so made attempts to take her from France. Because of the toll that France was suffering from the war which had him taken over by the Axis, Vietnam's home was also used by Japan. Vietnam would have none of that. Enter the Viet Minh; the Resistance. Influenced by America and his War of Independence, the Viet Minh were determined to do the same for Vietnam, and she was inspired. Using the training that she was getting from France and Japan, she quietly plotted independence. The leader of the Viet Minh, Hồ Chí Minh, declared Vietnam's independence after the August Rebellion on September 2nd in 1945, using what he learnt in America. The war became known as the First Indochina War, and she, with Laos and Cambodia, were able to defeat France. This resulted in the Geneva Conference, which formed the Geneva Accords, that lead to Vietnam's home being split into two, North and South Vietnam, with the North being the independent state, while the South was still occupied by the French. Vietnam's soul split as her homes did, and the conflict made her wish for it to be healed. The war did not end, but merely became the Second Indochina War; the Vietnam War, a war that made her known throughout the world as a military dark horse.
It was then that the confusion starts; the support she received from Russia and China, and from America. All made promises that she will be free, and it was quite obvious that in the beginning, she admired all both Russia and America greatly, both having whatever she did not have: Equality and Freedom. America was afraid of communism, and he was determined to free her from it, but Russia insisted that it would help her achieve both independent freedom and equality. The conflict only made more people unhappy, all sides, and that eventually, it would explode and ruin both Vietnam and America. The wedge between them grew so deep that Vietnam began to loathe America, and that she started to think that she should have listened to the other two in the first place. They fought a painful battle until he left, and she became a Communist, and thought her soul was united. She was wrong.
The scars of her divided soul were still too deep, and both sides were still in conflict despite the fact that she now wanted to just move on and heal. Her trust in others was still wavering heavily if they weren't her Soviet comrades; there was a deep void between her and America, and she did not want to rely on China. She wanted to rely on herself, and set out to fix and rebuild everything. However, with such internal conflict, the entire plan set out by her boss at the time completely failed. To make matters worse, Cambodia, her ally in the war for independence, and her started to have strained relations, which lead to China involving himself in it, resulting in the Sino-Vietnamese war, the Third Indochina War. It did not result in a definite victory for either side, but did result in a psychological one for Vietnam; China backed out, and she was able to keep with her mission.
With the previous plans being a failure, another was introduced due to capitalist tendencies that many were resorting to despite it being banned. These influences lead to the Đổi Mới plan; Renovation. The idea was to reinvent the Communist marketing and economy to have Capitalist influences. This was also to help her re-introduce herself into the world. Vietnam was so cut from others that some say she was on the verge of self-exile, and her boss believed that it was time for her to re-enter. With many neutral countries, she was able to form diplomatic relations again. Slowly, she started to rejoin the world, even making attempts to get along with her old father figures, China and France. However, just as she started to get somewhere, the collapse of the Soviet Union left her with no assistance. That was until the other nations started to provide aid, with one of her biggest supporters being one of those who started it all, her brother Japan. The plan worked, and Vietnam learnt that to live happily was to live with others, independent or not. But there was one more thing to do; in 1995, America and Vietnam agreed to recommence diplomatic ties and trade and normalise. It may have started out somewhat awkward, and sometimes their people still can't leave it behind, but everything was open now, and she found herself able to forgive him, like she did with her old father figures. With their normalisation and now growing friendship, Vietnam gained the confidence to enter the world, the world markets, and reinforce herself as a communist nation who can cooperate with the world, as witness by her getting a spot in the Asian sector of United Nations Security Council for the first time in 2008 and 2009. Now with one of the fastest growing economies in the world, the once quiet and poor country has the future looking a little brighter than ever.
[ Personality ] :
Vietnam is a bit of a paradox, being one of Asia's more rowdier countries. One can say that a hard life transformed a gentle agricultural nation into one more serious and hard edged. She went through all types of wars and occupations, and for one goal, she just wanted to be free. She is like a lotus; committed, pure, optimistic, calm. But she is also like a dragon; fiery, determined, fiercely protective, bold.
Generally, Vietnam tries her hardest to be your typical good Asian girl; gentle, polite, wellspoken, ladylike. She holds herself calmly, gracefully, proudly and confidently. This was more evident in her youth, when she was still living with her family, that she was nothing more than good girl who was willing to please her siblings. However, deeper down, she is also hotheaded and stubborn, and can hold one hell of a grudge. But she is also as forgiving, that is, given the right reasons. And as much as she tries to be that stereotypical Asian female, she cannot help that her life has built way to a deeper, tougher girl, a bit of a delinquent, a bit rebellious, and sometimes not very ladylike.
Vietnam is honourable, because she was brought up with honour, it has always been said, to gain respect you must respect the other. But she will break that honour to win, make all types of sacrifices that will lead her to victory, even at the cost of her own soul. She is loyal, loyal to her family, loyal to loved ones and friends, but cross her and she will turn and exact her own justice at whatever cost and with whatever method, and without hesitation. Her way of displaying determination can be a little extreme; no honour or pride will keep her down, as much as she values those qualities; if she falls, she will stand up again, if she is struck down, she will strike back. Her determination and stubbornness will keep her moving towards whatever goal she sets. Always hard working, she will not stop until she completes her task and achieves her goals; one knows that the climb out of a tough, hard life, one must work for it.
There still is the fact that despite Vietnam being street smart due to her hard life, she is still incredibly naive and idealistic [one can only learn so much in a sheltered Asian home]. When she was younger, wanting help to gain freedom as the Resistance, she did not believe just one, but at least three nations, Russia, China, and America, showing that the female nation is gullible enough to believe promises from opposing sides that in the end, threatened to tear her into two. This whole event caused her to toughen up dramatically.
However, stubborn as she is, she knows when she must change, as witnessed by the Đổi Mới renovation. She is willing to learn, and flexible enough to make changes and decisions that will bring benefits, no matter how long it takes to realise it. The result of the renovation did make her into a much more humble and open character, this proving to be the start of her international maturity. Nowadays, Vietnam is a much more friendlier nation; her determination empowers her to re-emerge into the international world, and to accept them more willingly than she would in the past. As it turns out, joining in was a lot more fun than she thought, even if she has a lot of catching up to do, which in turn has increased her curiosity, and sometimes reduced her reservation in order for her to do what she could not before; experience life. Slowly, this is building up her confidence, that perhaps one day, she can be just as great as the others.
[ Strengths/Weaknesses ] :
Unlike most of the nations, Vietnam doesn't come with a myriad of speshull skills, however, all countries have:
- Immortality [if their country and people still live, they will too. If the country dissolves, they will die, or eventually disappear even if not immediately.]
- National Empathy [Whatever the country feels/suffers, it will translate into an ailment to the country involved (a poor economy can be a cold). They also can feel their people, in a way.]
- Quick Regeneration [mostly cos of their immortality, but this can instead be slower than a human's if the country is suffering through something.]
- Superhuman strength [in Vietnam's case, she is slightly stronger than the average human, but nothing too noticeable. It usually comes with how strong the overall nation is.]
And now for more specific ones!
- Skilled Hands: It is said that she is skilled at creating things on her own, or at least try to. This could be attributed to Vietnam starting off poor and having to cook/sew/clean/etc all on her own.
- Agriculture: As an agricultural nation, she is good at farming and gardening.
- Cooking: As a colony of both China and France, she's learnt from the best.
- Military/Battle: has extensive knowledge of the military and raw stealth/guerilla tactics as well as environmental analysis, and can wield a number of weapons. Again, while she knows about it, she's not completely strong in it, thus has to resort to unorthadoxed techniques. She knows some martial arts, more importantly, the ones Vietnam is famous for is Vovinam. She usually, however, carries around a large long oar, which she uses for rowing, carrying stuff, and beating people up.
- Money: All Asians start off with Journeyman levels in anything related to money.
- Vehicles: While she can ride bikes and motorbikes fine, cars she's a bit of a madman, because she's just not used to it.
- Not in with the times: Vietnam, though from modern times, is still catching up with all yo technologies and gadgets.
[ Other Important Facts ] :
With each character showing certain features that make them unique, Vietnam's is her appearance, with her trademark long oar an item she is hardly seen without.
[ Sample ] :
Vietnam loved to go overseas, even if it was for a meeting. As the years went by, she was taking a more active role, making more contributions, and strangely enough, it felt good. Of course, the added bonus of meeting any country away from home ground meant that she could take a free tour. And lord knows how little the chances she got to do this, she's going to grasp these opportunities now. Learn something. Grow.
Checking her watch, she realised that she was running pretty late to get to her flight in time, and picking up the tails of her ao dai, she quickly hopped onto her motorcycle, hoping to dodge most of the motorbike traffic today (but that was to be impossible), securing her paddle behind her. She didn't want to leave without it.
Vietnam never expected that she was to be caught into an accident, where her bike swerved out of control, and she blacked out before she realised what happened. She never expected to wake up in the middle of some kind of...hang on, is she underwater? Was this a joke, that someone picked her up and just tossed her here? That or she hit her head too hard, but it feels too realistic to be just a dream.
There was only way to find out, dream or not, and that was to move forward, otherwise nothing will get done.
