I've had this sitting in my browser the last week- maybe it's time to post it. ^^;

Jun 27, 2012 16:34

First things first- yes, I'm still alive, in case anyone was wondering. I kept meaning to post and I just... didn't. And then I was sick for about a week (still fighting the tail end of it, but at least I can breathe now) and basically lost that entire week. So! Another long collection of random updates and things that have amused me lately, in no particular order. Ready?

☁ (Leaving this one uncut for importance) Figured I'd pass this on just in case- I got a phishing scam in my email the other day, pretending to be paypal. Something about my account being limited and they needed me to open an attachment and send it back to them with the info they needed. Pffft. Yeah, right. I checked paypal just in case I was being overly cynical and of course everything was fine with my account, so the email got reported. Thought I'd put it out there that this is making the rounds. I think everyone on my flist is intelligent enough to not fall for it, buuuuuuuut it did look fairly official and everyone has off days, sooo better safe than sorry. ^_^;

☁ An update on the money "owed" situation- Erin swears up and down the electric company was totally paid off when the account was closed, but she can't find the paperwork to that effect, so she is going to pay the bill as soon as she gets the paperwork I've sent her for the collections agency.

☁ Pottermore peeps: In case you didn't get the email (I know mine got automatically filtered off into the junk pile for some reason), the house cup will be awarded on July 5th (and there will also be news about Chamber of Secrets stuff, yay!). Help out your house and go earn some points! (Unless you're a Gryffindor, they're doing just fine. :P No, of course I don't have ulterior motives...)

☁ Another movie for the 1001 movies you must see before you die list!
Breakfast at Tiffany's- This was a lot more risque than I thought would've even been allowed by the censors at the time. O_o The main guy is effectively a gigolo hired by a married woman through most of the movie, there's shoplifting, a whole storyline based on the fact that the main woman was married at 14, oh yeah, and she falls in love with a guy who looks just like her brother and has been calling him said brother's name throughout the movie. The prostitution and the incestuous overtones were what made me most O_O. It wasn't a bad movie, it was just a little surprising to me. Plus it has the "we barely know each other but we're so in love!" trope that I hate, though it's not as bad in this movie than in others. OH. And what is it with the leading ladies in older movies? I'll grant you that I have a small sample size to work with, but it seems like most of the time, they're just RIDICULOUS. Infuriatingly flaky, sometimes downright crazy. It's like a bad parody of what a man who's never actually met a woman thinks women are like. I know it was a different time, but COME ON.

☁ Bit of drama at work- Lisa told me that apparently Ashley was bitching about how I never do anything I'm told to do and that I call for help constantly? Which is an outright lie, but yanno. The thing is... I could totally see Ashley saying that, but Lisa does like to spin tales. So it was a big question mark whether I was being told the truth to begin with, because it wasn't coming from a trusted source. The thing is- if there was really a problem, SOMEBODY would've said something to me by now, you know? Aside from it being the absolute opposite of true to begin with. But that's not where the drama ends, oh no. I wasn't even going to say anything to Ashley, but Mary mentioned it to her in a clearing the air sort of way. Ashley proceeded to tell both Mary and I that it wasn't true, blah blah blah. Okay, fine. Lisa tends to try to start drama where there isn't any anyway. But then John- I have my issues with him as a worker, but as a person, he's a nice kid and he doesn't talk shit about anybody- told Mary that Ashley, in fact, lied straight to both of our faces. Which pisses me off more than the original offense, really. LIKE I WOULDN'T FIND OUT? What an idiot. If you've got a problem with me, try saying it to my face. And if you're called on your bullshit, at least have the decency to fess up. Aside from that... whenever she's ringing register, she's up there with a freaking magazine, so she really has no room to say anything about anybody else. Just saying. Whatever. If all goes according to plan, I'll be leaving at the end of the summer anyway. So all the drama whores there can freaking BITE ME.

☁ Financial aid letter came in my email. The good news? I'm getting almost 15k with loans. The bad news? Estimated cost for the year is somewhere around 16k. Urgh. I'm hoping that with some careful budgeting (hello, ramen), I'll be able to hang on financially for the first semester. Then it'll likely be back to work after Christmas.

☁ In the meantime, I need to deal with the rest of the vaccination stuff (yes, still, though I at least shipped out the meningitis form). Definitely need a kick in the ass about that, for sure. Have to call the old doctor's office. I know I need AT LEAST two shots. Need to call around about apartments. Still can't do proof of residency stuff quite yet, but soon.

☁ On a somewhat related note: Stef and I were chatting and she offered for her and her dad to donate some used furniture to my apartment cause if needed. :D (Her dad is a bit of a hoarder, sooooooo I would only feel a little bad about taking the stuff, because I would actually be doing her a favor. XD) Considering that my plan was a sleeping bag to sleep in (still probably doing that though) and bean bag chairs for furniture, assuming I don't end up somewhere furnished, I... yeah. XD That would be good. As she said, it wouldn't be in the greatest condition and it may only last a year or two, but it would be something. And actually, that's just as well- over the next few years, I may or may not be hopping around quite a bit, living situation wise, so I'd like to stay as mobile as I reasonably can. Also I'd like to not spend a lot of money. XD

Threadless has a $10 tee sale going on at the moment. I uh, might've ended up with six. Video Games Ruined My Life, Moon Hug, Storytellers, Word!, Elementary, and Cookie Loves Milk. And there's still a few shirts I want from them. Oh, and I just realized yesterday that my FAVORITE shirt from them (Fail- It's an AMAZING design and I get comments from people all the time about how much they love it) has developed a little hole near the bottom of the shirt. So I will have to replace that one at some point. Ugh. I... may have a slight problem. Someone needs to keep me off the damn website when they have a sale. XD

☁ Somewhat related- I semi-recently decided that I should probably have some kind of summer dressy thing, even though I've never been much of a dress person (there was one when I was in junior high that I loved, but that was about it.). Sooooo I went to the mall and tried stuff on, and was reminded quite vividly why I don't like dresses. I was very much reminded of this quote I read somewhere: "I can't help looking gay. I put on a dress and people say, "Who's the dyke in the dress?" I looked freaking ridiculous. Of course, it doesn't help that I'm practically a midget, so everything is too long, and I have a big chest, so nothing fits in my chest without it being a tent everywhere else. Needless to say, I didn't get anything.

☁ Because it amused me: What I Really Meme

☁ Finally got around to finishing off Sherlock after stalling halfway through season 2 for months. It's good. ^_^ Still love the dialogue and one liners, and I especially love Martin Freeman's John Watson. The one thing that I really don't like, though? Moriarty. I get that he's supposed to be totally insane, but do they have to make him sound ridiculous to do it? How am I supposed to take him seriously as a villain when he makes his voice sound like that? It's the sudden pitch changes especially that get to me. Just. Why. (For anybody that doesn't know what I'm talking about, video here- skip to 2:30. Obviously, spoilers for the identity of Moriarty if you care about that.) On the other hand, when he forgets to make himself sound like a goddamn idiot, the actor is absolutely believable and brilliant. I will say, though, that I don't get the fandom. Granted, I've seen little of it, but what I have seen has been an abundance of Sherlock/John. To me, in this version, Sherlock most definitely reads as asexual and aromantic, and John definitely reads as straight. I can't even explain it as wanting to ship pretty boys together (nevermind that it's a stupid reason to ship characters, I know people do it), because neither of them are particularly attractive. What gives, Sherlock fandom? Overall verdict: worth it. Favorite exchange of the last episode?

Sherlock: You're insane.
Moriarty: You're just getting that now?

(Side note: Benedict Cumberbatch has a slight lisp. He hides it completely in the show, but I was watching a random interview on youtube where he's talking about Sherlock and it's definitely there. Huh. It's kind of adorable, actually. XD)

☁ From Gamefly:
Elder Scrolls: Skyrim- The good news is that the camera didn't make me physically sick like Morrowind did. The bad news is that the game drives me crazy. I like having options in my games. I do. But the totally open ended thing? Uuuuuuugh. I can't make decisions in real life, and you want me to decide what my entire game experience is going to be like? I spent way too much time wandering around like, WTF am I doing and where the hell am I going and AAAARGH. So. Not worth the frustration.
Zelda: Skyward Sword- I've only played a little of this, but it seems interesting enough. Need to work on that.
Not from Gamefly:
Finished Ghost Trick. They just kind of threw a curveball at you at the end there, didn't they? I felt cheated there for a little bit, but the more I thought about it, the more it made sense. Also I do like how they tied up all the loose ends. Still a little WTF for me, but nicely done. Also somewhat getting back into Dragon Age (I blame Maaya and Sherri. Just saying.) Oh man, I love Alistair. he's so snarky and great (though still older brothery). The best is when you get Morrigan in your party and you're just wandering around and those two are sniping at each other behind you all the while. Highly entertaining. I noted this line in particular: "Couldn't you crawl into a bush somewhere and die? That would be great, thanks." *sporfle*

☁ Via Liz: Epic Rap Battles of History! Some are better than others (they do occasionally cross the line, which cuts into my enjoyment levels- perfect example, in the Einstein vs. Stephen Hawking one which I otherwise love, where Einstein makes fun of Stephen's disability several times. I guess I can forgive those a tiny bit though because Stephen proceeds to totally KILL it. XD), but I highly recommend Bill Gates vs. Steve Jobs, Dr. Seuss vs. William Shakespeare, Justin Bieber vs. Beethoven, and the one I'm embedding below, Mario Bros. vs. Wright Bros which is my personal favorite. Surprisingly, only one of these is actually set up to be a complete ass kicking. (A note, videos are definitely NSFW due to language, if that's a concern for you.)

Soooooo hopefully it won't be another month plus before another entry. Independence Day falls on a Wednesday this year, so I actually have it off- probably going to spend it with Stef's family. Should be interesting.
