Yesterday was All Saints' Day, and I went to the Episcopal Cathedral here in Memphis for an Evensong, sung by the choirs of 2 different churches. It was exquisite--music included the Pie Jesu from both the Faure and the Webber Requiems, and another movement from the Faure.
I did really well, tear-wise, because the Faure Pie Jesu was sung at my husband's funeral over 9 years ago (I can hardly believe it's been that long sometimes), and usually gets to me, making me blubber like a whale, but this time it was just one tear--and thankfully a controllable one.
Now, after the Evensong was when the real fun began! Victorian Village--in a "no-man's land" section of Memphis between the Medical Center & Downtown (home of the Mississippi River)--used to have several old homes open for tours, but this was stopped over a year ago due to funding issues. Last night, for $50 a person, you could go into the Woodruff-Fontaine House (one of the big mansions formerly owned by cotton merchants here) for an Irish Wake, featuring a real live "dead" body, Celtic music, food and drinks (I said Irish, didn't I? No question about food and drinks, then).
My friends that sing in one of the choirs got "comped" in, but I didn't go--if I had known they were getting in free, I'd have put on something vaguely resembling Victorian widow's weeds and gone with them, but alas.
Today, at 5:30 PM, the choir of my church is singing Evensong, with a reception following. I should be making something to take to the reception--and may do that, if the spirit moves me.
Let's see--oh, yes! Tonight is the first evening since the time change yesterday, and there's something about seeing the nights draw in earlier that makes me feel *good*. I think it goes back to when I was a kid, and remember my parents and grandmother going around turning on the lights at dusk, the smell of dinner cooking, and just the closeness of the family. Dusk is always a cozy time for me--especially in the fall.
Other thoughts, in no certain order--
We've had lovely weather these past few days--bright sun, warm-ish days, chilly nights.
I'm debating about getting a set of flannel sheets--anybody use them? Comments?
I'd also like (maybe) an electric blanket--I'm really going to try to keep the heating bills down this winter. Cold I can deal with, but in the summer, I have to have my AC.
Now, it's time for lunch--maybe soup or a sandwich; something light, anyway.
See you all later!
