Labor Day Weekend! ! !

Having worked around 60 hours or so this week, I took advantage of being in prison this afternoon to get away early. ;)

Every year, there are mock job fairs held at the local Federal Correctional Institution and the satellite prison camp, a much lower security facility. The prison is located out by Southwest Tennessee Community College, and the camp is located in Millington, across the street (the aptly-named Navy Road) from the NAS Memphis.

Representatives from from various corporations, educational institutions, and social agencies go to these events to meet the inmates, give them pointers on resume writing/interviewing, and how to make the transition from prison to freedom. It makes me feel good to contribute in this way, though last year, after the break-in and theft of my jewelry, it was tough to talk to offenders without showing some flashes of anger.

Most of the people I talked to today, and last month at the main prison, kept talking about making bad choices. I try to instill some hope in them, by encouraging them to make a fresh start and make good choices. Some of them seem so young, and had so much going for them, and threw it away. I hope the messages we send to them sink in.

Anyway, after I got out of jail, I came right home and got comfortable, checked email, and now here I am. I've got a massage at 4:45, and a neighborhood tailgate party (GO UNIVERSITY OF MEMPHIS TIGERS! ! !) from 6-8 this evening; the location is close enough to walk, so I'll grab my trusty collapsible chair, cooler and head on over for an evening of fun and fellowship.

Tomorrow I may get a hair cut--or I may not. Some friends and I are supposed to be going to see The Lion King here at the Orpheum--I saw it the first time it played here, but here I go again, and it was a gorgeous show.

I still have plans to see Becoming Jane sometime; next weekend is a swimming party, so hooray for that. I was going to swim today but changed my mind--it's not as beastly hot as it has been here, so that can wait.

Someone called here from the UK Wednesday during the day, but didn't leave a message--any of my UK buds been ringing? Hmmm? I returned the call today, but got an answering machine--it appears to be a business, some type of engineering firm, I think.

Anyway, hope all of you have wonderful, long, non-laborious Labor Day holidays, and welcome fall!
