OPA! ! !

We have a large Greek Orthodox church not too far from my home here in Memphis, and this weekend was their annual "Big Fat Greek Festival". I went on Saturday, to enjoy Greek dancing, live music, a Greek marketplace, where I saw lovely jewelry and icons (made me think of you, logospilgrim), and glorious food, including kebabs, spanakopita (sp?), ouzo (Opa! indeed) and my favorite stop, the pastry shop, where I purchased a half dozen of galatobourekos (a soft buttery cookie swimming in a bath of powdered sugar).

The priest holds tours of the sanctuary, explaining the narthex as a transition area from the world to the church, the icons and stained glass windows, the Theotokos, and the tomb; he also put on his vestments, explaining what each article of clothing represented.

A fun and enlightening way to spend part of the day, followed by seeing Spiderman 3, which I thoroughly enjoyed, and where I saw the first trailer for HP and the OotP--looks wonderful, and some great Alan shots! Yummy!
