Question for the Doctor Who fandom

Jun 27, 2007 09:47

OK, I've got to ask. *What* is up with everybody suddenly posting major spoilers for recently aired Doctor Who episodes without putting them behind text cuts? Why is it that it looks like *everybody* who watches Doctor Who has suddenly decided that if an episode has aired in the UK, it is fair game to talk about major developments (like appearances ( Read more... )

I'm sorry. I put my spoilery comments behind cuts, but I did refer to the existence of a certain character outside them. I suspect this was because it was all over the internet months ago, and because, as you say, everyone else is mentioning it quite openly.

I have edited my two offending posts.

I think the general openness just affected people without them realising it. [hangs head] As the other commenter said, there are icons being offered everywhere, so I think the slackness is infectious.

People do have different definitions of spoilers. Some people don't mind knowing things that don't ruin the plot of a story; others don't even want to know a snippet of witty dialogue that has nothing to do with the plot because it might ruin their enjoyment of said dialogue when it pops up (and fair enough too). So I tend to put almost everything behind a cut except for whether I liked an ep or not. The character and casting rumour was everywhere for months, a lot of my flist is posting icons and fics, and I was slack with those two posts. I shall be a lot more careful in future. :-)

*hugs* Thank you!

And heh, that is a very appropriate icon! *smiles at it, even though I've never actually watched B7*

I'm sorry if I made you feel defensive. I know you are usually very careful about spoilers, and I could tell it was the general attitude in the fandom that was the problem, and not any one person. Certainly, you are much better about spoilers than most of the people in the fandom, and I'm very grateful to you for that. :)

And by the way, (to completely change the subject *g*) I just this week saw Paprika, the most recent anime movie by the same person who made Millenium Actress and Perfect Blue. Every time I see an anime movie these days, I think of you. ;) I really enjoyed this movie, although I think Millenium Actress is still my favorite. Have you watched it? I hope it gets shown in your neck of the woods soon -- I think you would like it, too. :)

It's my funny and sweet Vila being very careful about not catching a plague. :-)

I haven't seen it yet. [notes titles] The film festival is coming up very soon; I should look to see what animations they're showing this year. Did you see "Tokyo Godfathers" and "The Triplets of Belleville? They were wonderful!

Tell her I know lots of new fans who have just discovered the clever dialogue and great characters. And the bad SFX and rubber monsters aren't even a drawback for people who have seen Doctor Who. ;-) In fact, several DW monsters appear on B7 under other names; the BBC was careful with its money.

Heh. I admit the rubber monsters made me a bit wary, but my main problem with getting into B7 is that I generally get into series through its lead, and the fact that *nobody* I know in the B7 fandom likes Blake is not a good sign to me. People like Vila, they like Avon. But the best Blake gets is an apathetic "eh", and then a quick change of subject.

I know enough about B7 to know that Blake won't *always* be the lead. But still, it's called *Blake's* Seven for a reason...

Oh, but there are people who like Blake best! I know two on LJ and others on mailing lists. Blake gives their stories an impetus in S1 and S2, and it's interesting seeing how his obsession with his cause makes him compromise on his ideals in S2. When I saw B7 5 years ago, I knew he was being replaced and was looking forward to a change, but you know, I really missed him and wish he'd stayed.

And anyway, Avon and Vila light up each scene they're in.

...and Paprika is showing! I must book if it's not too late.

BTW Kon Satoshi also did "Tokyo Godfathers" which I mentioned. You'd enjoy it.

I've seen "Tokyo Godfathers" too, yes. I forgot to mention it in my list of movies by the same director. I liked it quite a bit, though from what I remember, it's very different from the other movies I've seen by him -- a bit less visual and more plot-oriented. (Which is not to say that his other movies have no plot, just that for some of his other movies, it feels like the plot is not the most important part.)

My brother just bought the DVD of Tokyo Godfathers, too. He's a big fan of Kon Satoshi. :)

I look forward to seeing what you think of Paprika.
