Computer question for all of you

Mar 29, 2006 17:44

My LJ is filled to the bursting with unfinished LJ posts that I post for myself fully intending to finish them later, and that never get finished and stare at me accusingly every time I look at my journal. That just seems so *wrong*, somehow! So let's try to write a short post this time, and see if I can finish it, for once. *g*

I have a question for all of you out there who are more computer savvy than me:

My dad has been asking me about this for a while, and I myself have been wondering about it even longer than that -- how do people change that symbol that comes before the URL in the address window in your browser (and on the tabs for Firefox)? (The one that's a pencil for LJ, and an envelope for gmail, etc.) Do you have to be the webmaster for the site to be able to do it? Say, can I change it for my journal if I want to? Or, if I have a shared domain, can I change it for that?

My dad's department has a webmaster who's a really big Mac fanatic, and he apparently decided that it would be cool to have all the department webpages have the apple symbol before the address. My dad doesn't really like it, though, and has asked me several times if there is any way he can change it for his personal webpage, but I don't even know how to start looking for instructions for something like that. Usually, I'd just google it, but I have no idea what the symbol before the URL would be called, so that makes it a bit difficult... So, I figured I'd throw the question out there, and see if anyone here knows how to do it. Any of you have any ideas? Or is my dad stuck with the apple symbol forever?
