[bounce] I just heard yesterday that Howl's Moving Castle will be here at our international film festival next month! That was how I saw all of my Ghibli Studio films originally. Yay! I'm getting tickets as soon as booking open. I also get to see lots of other wonderful anime at this festival: last year besides three Miyazakis, I saw The Triplets of Belleville (France) and the Tokyo Godfathers (Japan), both fantastic.
I now possess all the Ghibli films made before last year (Miyazaki's and others) on DVD in a boxed set (I looked for 'Studio Ghibli archives' on eBay). They're all dubbed into English instead of having subtitles which I much prefer, but hey. Have you seen Porco Rosso; it does flying and the achingly translucent Adriatic just brilliantly.

The Triplets of Bellville is a really... weird movie, isn't it. Really, really dark. There were parts of it that I loved, though, like everything to do with the dog. *g* And the Grandmother was very cool.
Have you seen the other movie by the same director as Tokyo Godfathers -- Millenium Actress? I think I liked that one even better than Tokyo Godfathers. Millenium Actress is like a love letter to Japanese cinema -- I loved how much of a fanboy the director is. *g*

Really?! The boxset I bought on ebay to give to my parents was all subtitled... And I *know* they had one there that went up to Spirited Away, too. All subtitled. I've never seen any dubbed boxsets... Of course, that suits me fine, since I'm not sure I could watch them dubbed. It is, but I loved it for the grandmother, the dog, and the triplets too. How cool was their method of catching frogs, and as for that stage act with the fridge, vacuum cleaner, and newspaper, well that was just brilliant. Champion himself was a strange nonentity though.
I haven't seen Millennium Actress and now I want to.
Bum. I'm annoyed other boxed sets weren't dubbed. The dubbing is pretty good but it never occurred to me I wouldn't get subtitles which I much prefer; I just chose the seller nearest me (Australia) because postage is a killer to here. I thought there'd be a way of choosing the Japanese version on the DVDs but I haven't found it. Sigh.
I'm not sure I understood Porco Rosso properly either. I get that he rejected humanity so utterly because of the war that he turned into a pig, but the ending puzzled me. I'm not sure if I can see his plane parked by the island in the last scenes or not. I hope they got together even if he didn't become human again. But I love it

I'm annoyed on your behalf! And I admit I'm a bit surprised, because I would have thought subtitling would be a lot easier than dubbing. Weird! Is the dubbing all right, at least? It's not all done in one voice, is it?
And yeah, I remember that shipping was really expensive on those boxsets -- almost more expensive than the set itself!
