Until I read about this today, I wasn't aware that the actress who plays Padma Patil in the Harry Potter movies is Muslim. But apparently, despite the fact that Afshan Azad was allowed to accept a role in such in an appallingly infidel movie series as Harry Potter (playing a Hindu character who is a witch!), her family seems to have decided she was going too far when she (now age 22) was discovered to have a Hindu boyfriend. Her father and an older brother are being brought up on charges this month of having threatened to kill her; her brother is accused of actually physically assaulting her.
The saddest part of this story by far, though, is that Ms. Azad has apparently been pleading to have the charges dropped. I'm not surprised, by any means--while I don't have any statistics handy, I strongly suspect that the majority of women who have been assaulted by a male family member (or a spouse or boyfriend) end up deciding to defend him from the law. Depressing. :~P
(I read this information in a variety of different news sources, some more informative, some less. There's more info out there than I've written about, but some of the sources may be questionable. If you want to read more, google "Afshan Azad" and dig as deeply as you care to.)
