Russia News Feed Week: 01/12-01/18

Jan 13, 2009 23:09

For my Cultural Foundations course called Contempary World Issues: Political, Economic and Society Investigations: Russia and Eurasia (which I am now just renaming to 'Russia' from here on out), we are required to read 3 articles, and be able to discuss what we read in class.  Seeing how this week, it's all about the gas related things, I decided to look a little farther back on the news feed, knowing that it'll change tommorrow, but I found these three that are just insanely crazy and I wonder at times what the Russians are thinking.

Russia's Medevdev opens his blog to comments  (Yahoo)

I understand that you, Medevdev, Mr. President of Russia, owns a blog.  I own a blog, and I'll use it as I feel fit, however when you post a comment, a video or anthing you happen to realise that since you are a political figure, that you are going to end up getting comments and other assorted items - often called feedback.  I simply shake my head at the fact that he opened it up to comments, and was not expecting to get any responses?  It is simply putting it as if the President of the United STates were to have a blog and give an overview of his weeks in office and what happens - I would hope that someone would respond and comment.

Although I will admit, while reading the article, I was rather amazed to find out that Russia is holding the Winter Olympics in 2014.  While I expect that this will boost Russia's popularity to the general public of the world, it will also show the world that Russia is slowly coming out of the dark ages since 1991.

Stalin voted most third popular Russian (Yahoo)

Allow me to re-read this headline, because this is absolutely CRAZY!  Okay, take two now.  Stalin was voted the most popular Russia because of the diaster that he left the country in.  It seems like everyone knows this name from those sixth graders learning about Russia in World Geography class to adults who lived through the time of the Soviet Union rise to power.  I cannot even describe how I feel about this, partly because it is absolutely crazy.  To even fathom that he had 50m votes out 140m among the Russian population.  I'm going to go sit down and not say anything else in regards to this.

Walmart joins Russia retail lobby group. (Yahoo)

Uh... Walmart joins Russia retail lobby group to want to move the world's largest supplying retails into Russia.  Wouldn't this mean that Walmart moves into Russia?  I thought that Russia was in a declining economy because they have been in capitalism for 20 years? *scratches head*  I guess, I'll keep an eye out for this one, to hear more about this one.

I'm off to go read more about Computer Networking, and get off this news feed.  I've had way too much, and while I sit here I keep seeing the news feed about Russia denying the gas lines through Ukraine.  I'll keep an eye on it, and just see what I can't make of it.  Sadly, being without a television to access to my normal news stations is quite limited while at school, but my efforts will be attempted to keep up with this - reading the news - throughout the year even past this class.
