notworthy's drabble request. Kaylee's kinda fun to write, even if she makes my Word Document red-squiggle like woah.

Kaylee once had a cousin who went bibbledy.
That, in an of itself, don't mean nothing, as Kaylee had a lot of cousins and the definition of 'bibbledy', according to the Cap'n, weren't nothing definite, but Kaylee found herself thinkin' bout him more often than not. They said he went to the edge of space (this was figurative, Simon reasoned, because the universe had no edges and no center, whatever the Alliance might think, and for all the Alliance did to him and his sister, it was the first time she'd ever heard him openly shilly-shally them), saw there weren't nothing there, and started bibblin'.
She thinks about him a lot, more than she used to. It's cause of River, she figures -- even though she done know that River is a man-made bibbledy, not a happenstance-made one like her cousin -- now that River's startin' to make a little more sense after Miranda and now that Kaylee's tryin' to find some common ground with her brother, cause weren't that the way relationships supposed to work?
The one thing she really remembers, though, is that she could never relate to her cousin, and when Zoe frowns at her protein bar and says somethin' to the effect of, "We're all going crazy, little one," in that guns-and-roses voice, it scares Kaylee kinda bad. She doesn't like the idea of not relatin' to the crew; they were hers, after all, and she's got to feather them and nest them down all warm and keep them fixed up shiny and flyin'.
It makes her not want to give up, just like Simon never gave up on River (and this might be the one thing they have in common.)
The second thing she remembers is that you could never get mad at a crazy person, cause you just weren't supposed to, so Kaylee's careful about feelin' nothing at all the day on Valkyrie, when River swayed her hips into Simon's and pressed a thick, red fruit to his lips kinda like the beginning of the universe.
If she hadn't turned and walked away to look at oxygen sifters or summat, she would have heard River mumblin' bout the edges of space.
