[ Here is Jamie. Watch Jamie walk past the bookshop, before realising that oh hey Alan works in a bookshop. And oh hey doesn't he work in this bookshop? So, well, considering Jamie has been doing his best to Pretend Nothing Is Wrong since that one hideous curse, he decides to go and say hello.
Because. You know. Nothing Is Wrong. Ever. ] Oh, hey, Alan!
ACTION | nope. banned!veritaphobiaAugust 12 2011, 10:02:24 UTC
[ Yes, he does, Jamie. He hit on you in this bookshop once, actually, but the less said about that particular memory, the better. Jamie manages to catch him just as he's leaving the counter with a trolley of books; Alan glances up with a smile. ]
Jamie. [ A beat. ] Don't tell me you've finally given in to the wiles of Jane Austen.

[ ... yes. That is the other hideous curse Jamie will pretend never happened, thanks. But Jamie looks confused for a couple of seconds wondering who Jane Austen is before remembering oh, right, soldier buffet. The wonders of education. ]
Well, she's not so bad. I actually finished reading something she wrote, which really is the highest of compliments. [ He might even, gasp, read another of her books someday. ]
But no, I just came to distract you from being productive. Working too hard is bad for your health, I've heard.

Well--there's a saying, I think, that one good book deserves another. [ The gravest of tones. ] Though I do sometimes worry about bringing premature baldness on myself from all this stress.

Yes, I can imagine it is very stressful staring at books all day long. I know I can barely last through English class, and that's only an hour. [ There's a beat as Jamie looks around discreetly. ] Not doing much business today, then, I take it?
[ Alan can probably tell by Jamie's body language that he's uncomfortable-- not with the conversation or Alan's presence, but just in general. He shuffles a little as he speaks, scratching the back of his neck and smiling his ever unconvincing crooked smile. ]

Mostly stories about lords of flies and wrathful grapes. To me, they are not exactly compelling.
[ Jamie leans against the counter, crooked smile still fixed firmly in place. ] Well, curses must get in the way of potential reading opportunities. I wouldn't take it personally!
[ The smile fizzles out once he realises he has mentioned the c-word because he is trying so, so hard to forget all about the fact the City has c-words, but he hurriedly continues to cover that up: ] I mean, I know I would rather stay indoors if my skin turned blue or if there was ever another summer camp.

Maybe it would have been more interesting if it had been about wrathful grapes. [ Jamie appreciates that! But at the same time it just makes him want to stop pretending and confide all his deep dark thoughts, what are you even Alan. ]
Just wandering. I suppose that is what happens when you're a truant and also jobless. You end up doing a lot of wandering.

On the one hand: work, ew. On the other: a cure for boredom and thinking too much. ]
... I think a job would be better than school. Anything would be better than school. It would be a chance to actually be a productive member of society, I guess, even if that society is in an alternate dimension and run by deities. And it would also be distracting-[ UH ]-well, something to distract me from being bored on non-curse days, I mean.
Because. You know. Nothing Is Wrong. Ever. ] Oh, hey, Alan!

[ He sorts his remaining books into each stack and comes out from past the counter, slower than usual. His smile's as open as ever, though. ]
Just a lull, I think. It's one of those unaccountable mysteries, like the schedule of red tides and why they gave Gone with the Wind a sequel.

[ Alan keeps smiling back, small and encouraging, as if he hasn't noticed the dive for cover at all. ]
Well-I think you're safe enough today. Are you visiting places in particular just now, or wandering?

Did you want a job? I think there's a school open once summer's over, but having something to do makes it easier, sometimes.
