Personality:
Battler is a teenager, with important teenager priorities like: grabbing boobs and flirting with every female specimen he encounters. It doesn't matter if they're family or not. It's all in the breast size.
Or so it seems at fist glance. When he's not being an absolute pervert, Battler is a smart young man with a penchant for reading mystery novels. He's the type of guy who likes trying to solve things before reaching the end, and if he doesn't find the answer, he keeps trying once and once again with different theories and methods until he does... even when those theories are sometimes absurd. He's got the "turn the chessboard" strategy he learned from his stepmother, in which, when he can't find a way out, he needs to think as his opponent and look from their side of the board.
He has a very rational mind... that would be very useful if he weren't such a stubborn and emotional kid inside. There are times his emotions are just too strong he rushes in without stopping to think for a moment. In both the novels and anime he's seen crying in different scenes, even when he keeps telling himself he has to be strong. Also, he never gives up. Or tries, at least. Even when everything seems to be doomed, he manages to stand up again (while saying his overused catchphrase "It's useless, it's all useless!") before getting back to the fray. It is even mentioned in the novels he is like a Phoenix.
Moving on. Battler also has a softer side. He's very caring and loyal to his family (though he's not in good terms with his father, whom he'll call "bastard" if the situations requires it), to the point he wouldn't suspect any of them during the Witch's game. He is also surprisingly forgiving, giving his own opponent, Beatrice, a second chance and even allying himself with her when he thought she had a turn of heart. Which was a lie, but oh well.
After understanding the truth behind Beatrice and his own sin, Battler tries hard to mend his error, this brings him even closer to her. Sorcerer Battler may seem more calm and serious after reaching the truth, but he's still the good ole' Battler inside: more in the "solving mysteries" department than in the "creating them" one. He knows the Truth but can't handle it his obsession for Beatrice makes him write an itsy bitsy mistake that keeps him trapped in a perfect closed room of his own making for YEARS in the most absolute and maddening silence. Even there Battler never resigned to that fate, trying even the most illogical solutions to the closed room mystery in order to get out.

Samples
(Please note that both samples must take place in Route_29’s setting.)
First Person Sample:
O-oi! Stop that!
Gaaaas~
[The video shows Gastly licking Battler's face. Repeatedly.]
Can't you wait a little? Just let me try to figure out how this thing works. [Lets out a heavy sigh as he pokes the buttons, with Gastly peeking from behind him from time to time, making faces. After a while, he gives up and looks at the ghost from over his shoulder.]
You remind me of a certain someone, you know? Just with less murder tendencies.
Gaaas!
[...no, he wasn't going to name the thing "Beato". He should find another name. Actually, he doesn't even know if the thing was a she-thing or a he-thing.
Battler sighs again, but this time looks more amused than annoyed.]
You don't mind a girl name, right? [Ugh, licked again.] Thought so.
Third Person Sample:
He wasn't so sure he had just lived the last hours. It was a confusing mix of images, events and music, ending with himself in the middle of nowhere with a strange machine on his right hand, a backpack on his back and a purple gas mass floating around him, looking strangely happy.
And the music, let's not forget the music.
Battler blinked slowly, still trying to comprehend what just happened. Wasn't he in that room in the mansion...? The last thing he remembered was himself standing besides the tube, watching the dried blood stains he knew had dripped from his now gone fingernails. A shiver ran down his spine as the countless days in silence mocked him when he closed his eyes.
He swallowed hard as he shook his head, like trying to wake up. The soft breeze moving the grass felt unreal. Perhaps he had gone mad? How could he know? He was still thinking clearly, wasn't him? This... couldn't be his imagination. He would be with Beatrice in his own delusions, wouldn't he? Why would his own mind create a calm road, a purple floating thing beside him and the annoying background music if his deepest desire was to be with her?
Was he still in the room, trying to get out? Had he given up...?
Gaaas ♥
Battler slowly looked up, to find the purple thing right in front of him. It... looked a bit too childish for his own imagination. He didn't think he could be THAT creative in his situation.
A low 'beep' brought him back to reality (or was it?) and he looked at the small red machine-thing in his hand. Well... It may be his own madness... but the noise was appreciated. And he knew he didn't have all the pieces lined up to formulate a rational theory. He just needed some time to think.
"I hear you, I hear you..."
The purple gas thing smiled widely and looked at the red machine. Battler let out a heavy sigh and poked the buttons, until a "Welcome to the world of Pokémon!" sounded from it...
