Salzburg

So, where in the world was Alyssa Noel Markham? Salzburg, Austria - birthplace of Mozart and filming location for The Sound of Music! Congratulations to luthienofold for her correct answer!

Upon waking up on my last day in Munich, I was seized with the desire to visit Salzburg for the day. I packed my stuff up, made a sandwich, and departed for the two hour train ride to Austria.

Salzburg is an amazingly beautiful city, except the train station is vastly confusing. I finally found the luggage storage and (after befriending a guy who was also there for the day) we struggled to find our way out of the damn place. When we eventually did, the two of us parted and I decided just to wander around and soak in the gorgeous views. I ended up climbing to the top of the Humboldt terrace, which is this hill/mountain place that overlooks all of Salzburg. It's a bit of a climb, but my goodness, what a view.

It was so wonderfully isolated in the mountain/hill place that I continued to wander around for a bit. Unexpectedly, I found Narnia.

No fauns, though. It's a shame.

I went in search of Mozart next. After all, you can't come to Salzburg without visiting the man himself! As good a view I got of Salzburg from Humboldt terrace, I still managed to get lost. However, I found Mozart's birthplace and his chocolates along the way.

After a good wander, I finally found him.

There was a fantastic little Christmas market setup and I bought some punsch and a little salmon sandwich thing from the local Rotary club. I did not know they had Rotary clubs in Austra. You learn something new every day! Both the punsch and the salmon thing were delicious and the hot punsch really helped warm me up. The Salzburg Residenz was right next door to the market and I went to take a look. Unfortunately, I only got to take pictures of the outside and of the Austrian royal family tree because they wanted monies to get in.

I was only in Salzburg for three hours (if you don’t count the hour I spent lost searching for the train station - missed my train, by the way!) but I definitely want to go back. It’s up there with Bath as one of my favorite places. I bought way too much chocolate there, too, for some reason. I'm serious, waaaay too much chocolate.
