Hey,
I am currently reading an excellent book called The Eyre Affair, by Jasper Fforde. It is exceedingly entertaining and i recommend it to anyone who is interested in some slightly sci-fi/fantastic prose peppered with delightful wordplay and literary allusion.
The book is narrated by an almost crime-fighter named Thursday Next. She works for a branch of the government known as SpecOps 27, the LiteraTecs. The job description entails laying down the law in cases of literary 'crime and punishment' ;o)
A secretive branch of government recruits Thursday to help track down a heinous murderer/thief or literary works/con artist named Acheron Hades. Thursday is more than thrilled to abandon her somewhat humdrum LitTec job, and there the story begins.
Additionally, we have Thursday's time stopping father, her 'mad' scientist uncle, Charlotte Bronte's Mr. Rochester, Dickens's crew from Martin Chuzzlewit and a slew of other characters whose wry wit and originality keep me turning pages.
