So it’s December and I think I can safely say that we’re all eagerly awaiting the solstice and the slow increase in the length of days. When I lived with my parents, we celebrated Christmas in our own secular way, and I liked “the season” a lot. I liked Christmas day a lot too because we got presents and what kid doesn’t like that. Most of all, I think I liked the festive feeling in the air and the decorations, especially lights leading up to Christmas.

But since I stopped being able to visit my parents most of the time, I haven’t done much to celebrate Christmas. With just two people, it just didn’t seem to have a quorum. I’m not sure I have a quorum now, but at least I have an audience - Malcolm. So this year, I am returning to Christmas, or at least a holiday I will call that which is suspiciously close to the winter solstice. I figured out that for me, the most important part was killing a tree and decorating it, especially with lights. Mission accomplished. I’d like there to be more tradition than that, but I am not entirely sure what I want to do yet. We aren’t constrained by anything beyond what myself, my husband, and my son would enjoy.

There is nothing on the very top of our tree. I have always wanted to put the Witch King of Angmar action figure there but I haven't done that yet. The whole black robes thing doesn't go so well with all the other stuff on the tree.

Anyway, I wanted to know this:

Did you as a child, and do you now, celebrate a holiday in December? What are your favorite parts of that celebration?
