Apparently an ad firm in the UK thought it'd be neat to upcycle the phrase "_______ is so gay!" into a cheeky, positive ad campaign targeting gay people who travel, in spite of the general consensus that using "gay" in such a way has a negative and sometimes offensive connotation.

Thus, "South Carolina is so gay."

There are so many reasons why this ad is FAIL, and not one of them is because I'm a homophobe.

One - no matter what you may personally believe, most people still consider calling something "so gay" to be negative and inappropriate in most contexts. I'm glad I never developed the habit, though it's still popular with the younger crowd.

Two - trying to make South Carolina come across as an uber-friendly place for gays to visit is HAHAHAHAHA funny. It's the fuckin' Bible Belt, people. While I wish my beloved south was not so hatefully conservative and culturally segregated, it simply isn't so. This is why I love the south for its beauty, its weather, its food, and the simple fact that it's where I grew up; not, for the most part, its people. I'm not saying that visiting gay people are guaranteed to be slandered or have unpleasant experiences, but they shouldn't be mislead into thinking SC is is West Hollywood.

Three - It's a prime example of SHOCK VALUE!!11! gone horribly wrong. Even a slightly more subtle wording could've been much more successful. Trying too hard FTL.

Four - seriously, I don't think most people, gay or straight, would think the ad is funny or clever. Just dumb.
