“I still remember the moment when we spoke for the very first time; you made me talk about things I’ve never told anyone else. Did you ever realize, how much you mean to me?”
The first time he saw him, it was the first day of spring. He was sat near the lake, reading underneath a cherry blossom. The light filtered through the branches, making his face glow.
Aiba didn’t know how or why, but this guy caught his attention immediately, he kept walking, his eyes fixed on him, on the way he narrowed his eyes to read some lines, and the way he took his finger to his mouth before turning to the page. Without thinking twice, he grabbed his camera and started taking pictures of that guy.
After it, he started to visit the park, at first once every other day, and then, every day, changing the times he visited trying to figure out at what time the other guy arrived. It didn’t take him long to figure out that the guy was always there right before lunch time, alone, either reading, playing video games or with his laptop.
Aiba liked to take pictures of him, first because the guy was very handsome and the result was always pleasant, but also because it had been a long time since he had been so excited to use his camera and did what he loved most, taking pictures.
He sat on the bench that was a few meters away from the other guy, and looked up, closing his eyes and enjoying the sun rays against his skin. It had been a long time also, since he had enjoyed even the little things like this.
It had all started months ago; he had just finished an abusive relationship with a man he met in a bar on one of those nights when he had gone out to look for an escape of his inner demons. At first, all had been nice, he felt loved, special, and important to someone… but, as easy as it came, it disappeared. Soon, that man started to use him for his own benefit, first monetary, then in every other way. Until one day, he simply disappeared.
Aiba was once again left alone, abandoned and without explanations. He wondered why he had allowed that to happen, and the answer keep being the same, because he made him feel alive and worth it, but above all, loved. How stupid of him, to think someone could feel that way about him.
After that, Aiba closed himself in his little shell. But, this time, he didn’t even bother to let out his pain with alcohol or pills, he cried himself to sleep every day after work, and had learned to put the charade of the smiling boy to keep the few people around him away from his business.
He had a crisis when everything inside him made an explosion that ended up on a visit to the emergency room and a large pile of stitches on his wrists. Sho, his brother moved in with him to make him company, but Aiba knew it was to keep an eye on him and avoid he ended up killing himself.
It was somehow hard to remember the days after he came back home, all he remembered were blurry images of Sho taking care of him.
Aiba looked down to his wrist at the thought and fixed his cardigan to cover the bandages that were peeking.
After a few weeks, he started to take long strolls nearby, when the fact of knowing himself watched became a little too much to handle. He knew his brother had good intention, but still, he wasn’t happy at all with the situation. At first, he didn’t go further than a few blocks, but with the passing days he started to enjoy more being outside, coincidently the first day he saw the guy under the tree, was the first time he took his camera out with him, due the insistence of his brother, what, he had to admit now, had been a good idea.
“Oh, the photo shoot was shorter today…” A voice pulled him out of his thoughts, and when he turned around to look for the owner of it, he had to look twice and almost fell down when he realized it was the tree boy.
“Eh?...Pho--photo shoot?” He replied nervously
“Yes, you weren’t expecting I wouldn’t notice you have been taking pictures of me, were you?” the guy asked in a teasing tone.
“I…I’m sorry.” Aiba said while blushing furiously.
The other guy chuckled, visible amused at the reaction.
“Can I see them?”
“Eh?”
“The pictures.”
“Su--sure… I’m really sorry, you probably think I’m some kind of creep..”
The small guy chuckled again.
“Well, indeed I thought that, but you don’t seem dangerous anyway, and I’m really curious to see if you took nice pictures.”
“Oh, probably not but…” Aiba said looking the pictures in the camera screen.
“Oh! I look good there!” the guy said peeking over Aiba’s shoulder “I’m Nino by the way, what’s your name, stalker?” said the slim guy and offered his hand.
“I’m Masaki, not stalker.” Aiba said giggling and shaking Nino’s hand. In the act, one of his sleeves went up, revealing his bandage to Aiba’s horror.
“Are you okay?” Nino asked curious, while he pulled his hand back and pulled down his sleeve.
“I…” his mind started to think fast on what to say or if it wasn’t easier to run away from there “…I tried to kill myself” he finally said, to his own surprise.
The smaller guy looked at him for a second that for Aiba seemed an eternity.
“Oh~.” Was all the reply he got, followed by a few minutes of silence. Aiba was ready to stand up and leave, cursing himself mentally for have been so open with a stranger.
“I’m glad you didn’t succeed…or else you wouldn’t have had the chance of meeting me.” the guy said chuckling.
Aiba smiled at that, while Nino smiled back at him, and then took his hand pulling his sleeve up and running his finger along the bandage.
“Does it hurt?”
Aiba couldn’t avoid but to give him a soft look.
“Not anymore.”
“I’m glad. You know, you have a pretty smile, it shines… like a sunshine. I saw you smiling the other day, that’s why I let you keep creeping on me.”
Aiba laughed at the teasing tone.
“Well thanks? Uhmm want to go to eat something, I’m starving” What? Had he really asked him out?
“Okay, let’s go Masaki”
He said before both of them stood up and headed to a nearby restaurant.
