Paizo publishing is having an RPG design superstar contest which I plan on entering. It's set up like a reality TV program with contestants eliminated every "round". Anyway it sounds like it could be fun and I have to come up with a wondrous item by the 14th. I think I have a few ideas that would be good candidates to qualify me for the competition.
Pen and paper game design is something I think I'd be good at, though my storytelling is stronger than my grasp of mechanics. The contest is a good way to test the waters although there are probably other places I could submit. I probably spend about 10-20 hours a week working on the current game I'm running. It's all my own setting, with no modules or setting material outside of the monster manuals, complete series etc.
I'm running a fairly complex story line that will take the better part of a year to finish. There are multiple sub plots for the different players.... so yeah-- it's a huge creative outlet for me. Sometimes I worry that it's too draining to do other projects (a web comic for instance) but at the same time I enjoy it tremendously. It seems like a fairly obvious solution to start designing game material in some official capacity.
And contests are always fun.
