It may surprise you to know that I actually have a fair bit of talent for writing romantic pieces. It certainly surprised me to read some of my older writing and experience the warm post-fiction longing for someone to snuggle with.
One of my main criticisms about most gay films, comics and stories I've read (and I am by no means an avid consumer) is that they always seem to be so divorced from the reality of gay life. Case in point: when two guys meet in real life and start referring to each other as boyfriends after the second date-- it rarely ends well.
I blame the mainstream media for a lot of the perpetuation of this idea that love can conquer anything and two people can be meant for each other. While it makes for good entertainment, I think it sets disastrously unrealistic expectations about love and happiness. Human interaction will never be so perfect as the dialogue between two characters written by the same person existing completely inside a set of controlled circumstances designed to bring them together.
