Stealth Experiment and the M6 Vaper.

This week was one of the few occasions I was going to have been on long distance public transport since I took up vaping/electronic smoking.  I decided I would try out some stealth vaping just to see how it was done and how much other passengers would notice.

The journey I was doing was to involve a three hours train journey on Monday 2nd July and the return on Thursday 5th July.  For the journey I chose to use a very small variable voltage device I built and using a standard 510 2.5 Ohm atomiser and just my usual 50/50 liquid which produced loads of vapour under most circumstances.  I wanted everything to be as close to what I normally use as possible except for the inhalation/exhalation method.  So yes the device was set at 4.2 volts and regulated to stay at that for the whole life of the battery.

This is the device with the atty and smart cart attached, yes a double AA battery box with 510 connector.

I calibrated before I left with a multimeter so under load it would be giving me the 4.2 Volt output.

I must also say at this point that I have done work in the past where, from a legal standpoint, I am classed as a trained observer.  This means I tend to be quite nosey and pay attention to what people are doing in my immediate field of view.  I was deliberately going to observe my fellow passengers, especially since I was more than ready to explain what I was up to if needed.

The stealth method I went for was not very hard.  Inhale as normal but hold it for a few seconds, then inhale a little air, then I released.  Ninety percent of the time practically no vapour was exhaled at all.  I also did several exhales where I didn’t hold the vapour in as long and exhaled into a cup I was filling from a flask of tea (which was tepid after about an hour and a half).  This meant some vapour around the cup, more than there should have been of course especially when the tea was cold.

So here is what happened to me summarised over both trips.  Nothing, no reaction from anybody else on board my trains.  I consumed 1.5ml of liquid on each trip so its not as if I wasn’t vaping much.  On several occasions I even let some of the vapour out to hang for a few seconds in the air.  I did not notice even one person look at me while I was using the device.  On the return journey I actually had a person sitting opposite me at the table and a full four at the table opposite on the aisle.

Now when I got home yesterday (Thursday 5th July), I started my computer up and caught up with emails and then looked at the news.  I find it hilarious that at exactly the same time I was on a train stealth vaping my way down Scotland, some idiot attempting apparently to stealth vape was causing himself and his fellow passengers just a bit of a problem.

Fake cigarette caused M6 police Megabus coach swoop

Someone apparently needs to give the guy lessons in stealthing, or indeed needs to learn how to do it openly and explain like so many of us do.  The police did react in an overly extreme way though, I just don’t get why they kept the people onboard the bus as long as they did.  Brilliant though that I chose the same week to try out stealth vaping at the same time this happened.
