British Museum picspam: the Julio-Claudians

Aug 02, 2010 04:23

Here's the first of my promised picspams, and I'm tired, so I decided to go with something that required as little fact-checking as possible. So I went with some of the busts and statues from the Roman galleries. Sorry, hoc_voluerunt, this probably isn't what you had in mind when you asked for epic, but that'll come... when I'm more awake. >_< But the Julio- ( Read more... )

I LOVE YOU FOR LOVING THIS. I'm glad you found it informative. I know much more about the Imperial period than I do about the Republic, so I did kinda go off on one... XD

Oh, it gets much better. Trust me on this. ;)

The photos don't capture just how creepy the eyes were in real life...

Yay for Julius Caesar! It's so sad, isn't it? But what about the incredible slashiness, eh? :) (You should totally read Antony and Cleopatra as well. Agrippa is in it. And he's snarky.)

Silly, silly Crassus. Should've listened to Cassius, shouldn't you? (No one ever listens to Cassius, poor bb. No wonder he became so bitter and twisted.)

PROSCRIPTIONS SUCK.

Aaaah you need to see I, Claudius! You've not lived till you've heard Brian Blessed roaring, "QUINCTILIUS VARUS, WHERE ARE MY EAGLES???" XD

FUCK YES AGRIPPA. By the by, since you brought him up, I was re-reading your NatM fic with Agrippa the other day, and your description of him totally reminded me of what he looks like in Rome. It made me smile. /cool story, bro

I DON'T MIND WHEN YOU PLAGUE ME. IF YOU CAN'T SQUEE OVER ANCIENT PEOPLE WITH YOUR FANDOM FRIENDS, WHO CAN YOU SQUEE OVER THEM WITH?

MORE WILL COME SOON. I'll do another post later today, though you probably won't get it till tomorrow. (Stupid time-zones.)

Oh jesus, I can't get over Julius Caesar. Brutus and Cassius' massive argument, and their making up, and oh god when they say goodbye...
That, that, that line, that... *checks copy*
"Strike as thou didst at Caesar. For I know when thou didst hate him worst thou loved'st him better than ever thou loved'st Cassius."
THE HEARTBREAK. THE ANGST. OH GOD WHY IS IT SO BEAUTIFUL.
Also, on the page opposite that in my book (the library's book... damn) is an extract from Cicero's De Amicitia. Which makes me happy. Because didn't he dedicate that to Atticus?
(Also, I'm sort of hating on this copy, since it tells very... simplified versions of history. I mean, for one thing, it describes proscriptions as just... the death penalty. Like, ordinary executions. ...)

*sob* I just really, really, really want to see it acted out now.

SNARKY AGRIPPA OH GOD I NEED IT NOOOOWW.

You were - re-reading - my fic. You were re-reading. My fic. You were actually - re-reading - my fic. *blushes furiously*
You have no idea how warm and fuzzy that makes me feel.

OH GOD WHY CAN'T I KNOW YOU IN REAL LIFE I WANT TO JUMP UP AND DOWN AND SQUEE AND FLAIL ABOUT AND HAVE AT LEAST ONE PERSON WHO DOESN'T STARE AND THINK I'M INSANE, OH GOD THE INJUSTICE.

(Oh god I have to go to bed, I have a morning class tomorrow, oh god whyy.)

What did I tell you? What did I tell you? IT'S MAGNIFICENT.

Why does it have De Amicitia? Something to do with friendship, obviously. :P

I think I remember that our school copies glossed over the proscriptions, too. But to be honest, that scene rather speaks for itself. I mean, the three of them are just sitting there, coolly talking about who they're going to bump off, including family members! And there's Antony's "Look, with a spot I damn him." It's so chilling. That's all he has to do, put a mark beside a person's name, and their life is over. *shudder*

We-ell... the 1953 movie is on YouTube. First part's here. (The quarrel scene is in part 9, just sayin'. ;) ) Watch iiitt. Also, dontcrosscross is in the process of organising a viewing party for one of the other screen versions over on unkindestslash.

I love that fic, so I'm glad you feel warm and fuzzy. :)

Hold out till uni, bb - that's where you start meeting like-minded people in real-life! But I know what you mean, I wish I could meet my fandom friends, too, just for a good IRL squee. :)

Oh god I should be asleep and I haven't done my work but I don't care this is just too much fun.

Right now, I am incredibly angry with myself, because I returned Julius Caesar to the library, and now I want it baaack.

Also, in regards to De Amicitia, the quote was something about how the world would pretty much fall into ruin without friendship, and how it keeps everything in order. Which, I have to say, is a lovely little sentiment, especially when you start thinking about horrid, corporate business-y things that have no heart... (wait, is Cicero reaffirming my belief in humanity? Something's not right...)
You're right, about that scene. It is a little freaky. I shudder in sympathy.

WHY MUST YOU TEMPT ME SO, IT'S PAST MIDNIGHT AND I WANT TO WATCH IIIIIT. *SKIPS TO PART 9*

Okay, now I feel like I'm just being silly, but I can't help it, because someone likes something I've written (shutup, I'm insecure). *heaps gratitude into your virtual arms*

Oh good god, don't remind me. I really have to start worrying about what uni to go to, and what course to take, and right now, judging by my reports and recent record (which have done nothing but decline in about the past three or four years), I'm having serious doubts that I'll actually get into anything I'd want and if I don't get in what do I do, I don't have any experience of real life or any credentials to get me anything until I can, I don't know, die of underachievement, oh god real life go awaaaayy.
FUCK YOU MIDNIGHT, STOP LETTING ME GET ANGSTY.

(Okay, I'm gonna post this, watch part 9, and SLEEP. And... reaffirm my english teacher's low opinion of me by not doing the work she set.)

Oh no, you need to do your work! :(

The old Julius Caesar can be rather addictive!

Don't worry, I can empathise with that. I'm so insecure about my own writing, so when I get good feedback on my stuff, I get so stupidly happy. :D

Ah, sorry. *hugs* Try not to worry too much. It's perfectly natural to be scared at this point in your life, and be convinced that everything's going to go badly. Believe me, I was the exact same way. Is this your last year of school? If you think you have to up your game, then you still have time to do it. Just make sure you don't push yourself too hard. That's as bad as not pushing yourself at all. But doing your homework does help. ;) (Yes, I, a complete stranger, am nagging you to do your homework, over the Internet, from the other side of the world!) And I should probably stop pointing you towards things which are going to distract you.

Well, hope you enjoyed it! And slept well.

Yeah, hypocrite. :D
Not that I mind your distractions. Not in the least.

"Yes, I, a complete stranger, am nagging you to do your homework, over the Internet, from the other side of the world!"
Y'know, when you put it like that, it sounds a lot weirder than it feels. I love that about the internet, though - that I can be having retarded conversations with people from the other side of the world, and manage to feel closer to them than some of my closest acquaintances in "real life". It's amazing and awesome and it makes me very, very happy.
Internet, I love you. Thank you for existing.

*hangs head* I am a bad, bad person. (Speaking of distractions, it looks like all of I, Claudius is up on YouTube. Definitely watch it, if you find the time! It's truly excellent.)
