Overachievement as an Understatement

I submitted a paper today that was great. It was great, but it was half-assed & nowhere near my best. I cannot explain how terrible this makes me feel, despite the fact that I'll likely receive an A. I suppose it's more evidence that grading scales structure perverse incentives.

On a harsher note, I've discovered that I find it hard to bear people who request reward for behavior which is already expected of them. For example, submitting a paper on time shouldn't merit extra credit. For crying out loud, don't encourage the ever-appealing metamorphosis into sissies & namby-pambies!
