a/n: it's a magical day. i've been away from LJ for a really, REALLY long time. then one minute, i'm reading new fic and scanning old comms and the next i'm finding my old WIPs and unposted fics. like, TONS of them. and this one, this one was written TWO years ago. seriously my brain... =_=

prompt: sailing ships, seasick - onew

It's utterly fascinating how these bottled ships come to be. Taemin picks one up, carefully from the shelves, and examines it like he always does these mini wonders.

The intricacy of the details wouldn't escape anyone even if they tried: the wide sails; the marked flags; the ridges on the body; the colors - whoever made this surely made it with a lot of patience and love.

"That's a replica of an actual pirate ship you know..."

Taemin is horrified by the feeling of the bottle slipping from his fingers in shock. He stammers and nearly screams - or squawks, whichever's more embarrassing - as he struggles to get a hold of it before it hits the ground. The owner of the cheerful voice must've had a lot of experience with clumsy teenagers, because he's still chuckling even as he leans in just in time to catch it before it shatters on the floor.

"I really should work on coming out of nowhere when customers are handling the merchandise." The cheerful guy, or, well, store clerk, Taemin corrects, is still surprisingly calm. He sets the bottle back on the displays and faces Taemin with the same bright smile that made him lose his grip earlier. "My name's Onew," he says, hand out for Taemin to take, "do you speak?"

Of course he does, duh, his mouth has gotten him caught in more unfortunate circumstances than his clumsiness has, "Y- yeah school few blocks sorry hand slipped the bottle." Point.

"Nice to meet you, school few blocks. Although I assume that's not actually your name." Onew is chuckling more melodiously now, eyes twinkling as they focus on Taemin and wait for a more intelligible answer. "Right, sorry, Taemin." He offers a shy smile and finally takes the outstretched hand to shake.

"Taemin. Hi. Look here, this one's new..." Onew is already walking to another shelf, picking up another bottle and showing it to Taemin. Which, seriously, why? He couldn't have already forgotten how Taemin nearly broke the last one. "It isn't a replica of anything, more like a concept I thought out a couple of weeks ago."

"You made this?!" Taemin is quite proud of himself for not dropping the bottle this time around.

Onew nods quite proudly, and for good reason. The ship is beautiful. "Most of these were made by my dad, but I have a few on display, too."

They spend a good amount of that Sunday afternoon exploring the store. Or, actually, Taemin does, and Onew helps him.

He finds himself surprised the most by the fact that the bottles are not actually built around the ships. For the longest time, Taemin has thought it was the only way. Apparently they make it so that they can fit the body through the neck, and then raise the sails after. Taemin gets lost in the explanation after a while, Onew’s bright eyes and enthusiasm getting the brunt of his attention.

Taemin unintentionally makes Onew laugh quite a few times for saying silly little things, or reacting a certain way to a particularly more amazing bottled ship. The blush he sports each and every time is solid proof that he really doesn’t mind it at all. In fact, he has grown to like hearing that laugh - a lot.

The next day, Taemin spends too much time thinking about Onew that he’s sure he’s going to fail his upcoming Math test. He wants to pass by the souvenir shop again after school but he’s not sure if he should. The last thing he wants is for Onew to think that he’s some kid with a high school crush - which he is, technically, but still.

He’s in the boys’ locker room. They have P.E. today and he’s hoping the teacher doesn’t notice him much because a black-eye is not a good look on him. Also, dodge ball sucks.

Just as he’s getting up to meet his fate, he sees Onew - standing there, in the same locker room, wearing the seniors’ school uniform. He’s probably just a hallucination.

“Hey!”

Or not.

“Onew... what..?”

Onew laughs, thank god. “I knew you looked familiar!” He’s being hugged, why is he being hugged? “I should’ve figured it out when you said your school was just a few blocks from the store.”

Still reeling from the two of them being so close, all Taemin could do is nod when Onew pulls back and looks at him expectantly.

“You should come by the store later. My dad just finished a couple of new ships. You’ll love them!”

Taemin promises he will. He doesn’t expect Onew to be waiting for him by the gates after school. Taemin’s heart does a few flip-flops when he sees Onew’s bright smile and he wonders when it will ever get old.

-

Onew’s smile doesn’t get old. It’s proven by how, even after nearly four weeks, he still mentally palpitates every time it’s flashed directly at him.

He’s been spending everyday at the store after school. They talk, mostly. One time, when Onew’s dad stops by to check on them, he finally understands the whole process of making the bottled ships. It pays to not be distracted by cute smiles and cheerful voices, Taemin thinks belatedly.

Taemin’s been doing his homework there, too. Onew helps him sometimes, or brings him snacks, which is definitely more awesome than just figuring out the significance of so-and-so and so in Ancient English Literature.

Sometimes he goes to the store and does nothing. He brings a book as a front - sits by the corner of the counter where Onew is - so he doesn’t get caught being creepy just-- watching.

But his favorite days are the ones when he loses track of time, realizes it’s closing time and Onew walks him home, just to be safe.

They always spend an extra five minutes just saying goodbye on Taemin’s doorstep.

-

After a while, his mom looks at him accusingly every time he comes home and it’s already dark outside.

He tells her he’s met a new friend and the next thing he knows, his mom’s asking him why he’s home so early some days and, “Does your friend like cake?” When his mom finally gets around to baking one, he finds out that, yes, Onew absolutely loves cake.

While inhaling yet another slice, Onew mumbles something. It takes a while for Taemin to register what it was because he’s been watching him lick some chocolate fudge from the corner of his lips. He comes back to earth when Onew’s entire face finally goes back into focus and - is he blushing? “I’m sorry, what?”

He starts to feel dizzy when Onew starts biting his lower lip.

“Cake. I know a place just a bus ride from here. They have good cake and coffee and muffins and we totally don’t have to go if you don’t want to I was just thinking maybe you would because your mom makes good cake which means you know good cake and they totally have great cake... and coffee and muffins and we...”

“Yes.”

Hell yes. Damn it.

- - -

They do go to the place. And when fudge gets smeared on the corner of Onew’s lips again, Taemin reaches out to wipe it with his thumb.

He then puts his finger to his lips and sucks.

Onew falls off of his chair.
