Synapses.... oh god, synapses

Jul 27, 2008 12:51

Okay, so I had this thought after returning from dinner with my family.  Tell me if I'm crazy, or if this is SCIENCE!  This is how I understand things...

Fact: Teenagers' brains develop as best as they ever will by about age 17 at which point, no new connections or cells are generally created.  The reason they do stupid shit is because they have not sheared away excess synapse connections, so each time they approach a problem, their brain struggles with it and works at it from ten thousand different angles- they haven't found process that work yet.

Fact: The older you get, the more synapse connections that are sheared away to streamline your ability to process i.e. you can think faster without getting confused in the process of how to think.

Question:  It has been my theory that most people upon reaching a certain age seem to just die inside.  No motives, no passion, no original thought... is this increase in stagnation an emotional response the the physical finality of synapse connections being slimmed down to increase processing time?  Are we all sacrificing depth and original thoughts for speed and motor control?

Please somebody who has a better grasp on neural stuff, fix question.  fix sad question.
