Last night's sudden L5R cancellation was well-spent with five Devastator Marines, paint, and The X-Files, and then with Army Builder and my ancient Imperial Guard figures when the Ladies Night Invasion swarmed 23-E and me and my testosterone fled to the safety of "Man-Town." Which is ironic, considering the den is also Bean's room and technically he isn't a man anymore...
Army Builder was updated and license extended, and of course half my lists are no longer compatible. Crap. Luckily, this time I saved most of them as HTML files first. I rebuilt my Necron list and have just over 2,000 points. I then re-did my Imperial Guard list and calculated about 2,600+ points of infantry and tanks - and bad paint jobs. I cringed for the most part as I dusted off the figures, but to be fair the Guard was my second Warhammer 40,000 army and the bulk of it was painted circa-1996 - 98 or so. Twelve years is a long time, but the difference in painting skills is pretty obvious.
I started Warhammer 40.000 with the Tyranids in 1994, or thereabouts. From there, I moved to the Guard, and played them regularly until '98 or so, when Warhammer 3rd Edition hit and I played Dark Eldar once I adjusted to the new rules. From the Dark Eldar I bult my largest army to date, my 3rd Ed Space Wolves circa 2000. i remember deciding on the army and much of the details at a Yule celebration
autumnlaughing hosted when she lived in Amherst - mainly because your brain wanders a lot when circling the fire over and over again. Ironically, I still consider that celebration as one of the best pagan events I attended... At some point around here, I also built my Necron army, but I'm not certain when that actually occurred.
There was a several-year gap between the armies until 2008, when I started my current project, the Ultramarines. This gap can be summed up with two words: Fourth Edition. I essentially stopped playing for six years until Fifth Edition debuted in 2008, and I took a chance and picked up the rulebook. I'm glad I did, as Fifth is a lot of fun. Imperfect, to be sire, but much better then Fourth Edition by far. I'm not completely certain, but after two and a half years of work, I think the Ultramarines may be close to surpassing their feral brethren in sheer size (both models and points) soon, but I need to once again rebuild both lists. The Ultramarines will be fairly quick as I saved the original monstrosity of a list in HTML. The Space Wolves will be longer, as I haven't updated the army in years and the 5th Edition Codex changes the Space Wolves a fair bit.
To be fair, other projects have cropped up as time goes on, and I've done a few pieces for the store. (OK, more then a few...) I've dabbled with Hordes and Warmachine and also tried (once again) to get into Warhammer Fantasy. However, I always keep being drawn back to "the grim darkness of the far future," and I've got bits to start an Eldar force, and expand my Imperial Guard a bit. I've also got small forces for Tau and Chaos Space Marines that may eventually get love. Oh, and I'm beginning wortk on an Ork army for the store, which may be paired with a Blood Angels army as well.
This entry really veered from its original intent, but such is writing for one's edification, I guess. At this point, I've pretty much given up on Warhammer Fantasy, and Hordes and Warmachine don't really excite me anymore - although with Ralph getting into Warmachine that may change. If Warhammer Fantasy ever does a Nippon/samurai army then I'll be tempted, and yes, I will paint them as Crab. But until then, I'm done.
And i'm also trying to ignore that Night Lord list I wrote up on my honeymoon. I've got enough projects. Really.
