I'm rich! (No, I'm not.)

But I'm a little richer? Was at the ATM today to take out some cash, habitually hit the show account balance option, and the balance that came up was three times what it should be. Cue my confused face.

Considering the holidays coming up, I decided to stop off at the bank office before going home just in case it was an error of some sort (likely) that needed them correcting it, and queued with the other concerned people who wanted to sort things before the holidays and end of the year. Loooooots of old people cluttering up the place since they don't bank online, so I left the seats to them until it quieted down a bit.

Mid-way through my wait, the cashier steps out from behind the counter to announce to the room that people waiting for the teller window were going to have to wait a bit longer since "we are out of cash." Oops? Confused murmurs all around, but he then started serving regular customers which actually sped up my line, so that was nice. Once I was finally first in line, the bank guy dutifully apologised before asking what the problem was. I explained and he wanted my ID and then pulled up my bank account and said, "Well, someone deposited the money in your account marked 'gift'. Do you know this person?" Me: "...that's a relative, yes."

Then he says, "While I have you..." and I think, "uh-oh," but actually, he came out with useful advice, didn't argue with me when I mentioned I'd already decided what I was going to do, and did the maths I'd been avoiding about when to move my money around. End result is that I have a tax free savings plan, a new savings account, a monthly amount that goes into this new-fangled account, and a winter solstice gift that is more than I know what to do with. (My family is comprised, on my mother's side, of rich atheists with more money than sanity.) It's not that I'm not grateful; it's a very generous gift of nearly twice my monthly income, but I'm already sitting on so much money I need to do something with it without it being enough to serve a purpose (I can't buy a house with it.) So I need to come up with something I want that I can totally waste it on.

While waiting in the bank office I watched the news and they said unemployment was up again, the deficit is up, and there will be more cuts. This is why I avoid watching the news. I know, I know, y'all want my problems.

confoosed, the family, because vera is insane, bassett allsorts, rl
