Jools Holland and Friends

I saw Jools Holland at a concert tonight. What the poster doesn't reveal is that Herbert Grönemeyer was one of the friends who appeared on stage with him. Grönemeyer's attendance was on short notice, and I have to admit that he was my reason for buying a ticket.

Before the concert I only knew Jools Holland by name. Now I know that he's a brilliant piano player, and it was a delight to see and hear him play.

But I do wonder a bit about his choice of friends. There was Ruby Turner, who has an incredible voice, and I understand why she was last on stage because in a way she was the highlight of the evening. There also were two excellent background singers, Rosie (I didn't catch her last name) and Louise Marshall, who both sang solo parts as well. Then there was Herbert Grönemeyer, who turned out to be a good blues singer, and who can't do no wrong in my eyes anyway.

But why Marc Almond? If it hadn't been for Grönemeyer, Almond would have been the "star" of the evening, the household name that everybody knows, but the truth is that Marc Almond can't sing to save his life.
