A rant on thinness, my way.

For Girls Only, Probably..., a rant by JKR.

There were parts of JKR's rant that I completely and utterly agreed with. This thinness phenomenon is ridiculous. Paris Hilton (and oh, tell me that she wasn't specifically calling that airhead out) annoys me as much as the next person. Also? She needs to wear some clothes out in public please. I have no desire to see her stripped, thanks. I like my food to stay down. I mean, I look at all these models, and I'm going, "uh, I'll never be below a 14 on a good day." Hell, I just went wedding outfit shopping (the wedding on Saturday of…er, well, we'll say No-More's) yesterday and I was appalled at the lack of cute, young clothes to wear. I mean, I want to dress up but damnit, I'm not a matronly sort. I'm 24, not 55.

Anyway, my point of that was the fact I had to settle for a semi-cute outfit instead of what I really wanted (something to knock the little bitch on her ass). Extremely vindictive, I know. I'll go to Hell later; I have to get through the wedding first. So I can understand the rants since I've been having them since I was 14 and realized I was plump (and now have upgraded to fat, but really, that's another issue all together). About that time I realized that boys don't like girls who look like me, which helped fuck up my confidence (before I hit the teenage years, I was the most confident person…nothing could have dented it). Fat is certainly not the worst word to call someone. Personally, I think that word is pedophile, but what do I know?

I like the Stupid Girls song because it's as much a thumbed up nose at the entire industry, not just the Paris wannabes. I think it does need to change, but I don't think it well. It hasn't since Twiggy's been around. It's just…society, and until that changes, the industry won't. Money is power, and until people stop buying the products, emulating (or allowing their kids to) won't change. The obsession with cheerleading (specifically the parents that make their children practice six hours a day, foregoing education for the popularity of being on the squad), popularity, designer clothes, being known with no effort involved (like reality tv) , etc all help promote this self-destructive behaviour.

But that's not the point of my rant. Well, it's part of it, really, but not all.

Let my girls be Hermiones, rather than Pansy Parkinsons. Let them never be Stupid Girls. Rant over.

Okay, I don't understand that statement at all. Hermione is great character, but so is Pansy since she serves a purpose as well. Perhaps I just see Pansy as more of a Cordelia type, since she obviously cares for Draco but really could do without the rest of the school. She's vain and shallow…and? Hermione's not the best of all characters either. She uses words as weapons like Pansy does; hell, she used her wand on a friend because teenage jealousy. I mean that's not exactly the best role model either. Pansy's not a complete wretch but neither is Hermione the goddess character. I would think that JKR would want her daughters to be themselves , and not to be like everyone else. It just seems to me that she's sending a mixed message. I personally wouldn't my daughters to be anything but who they are (nor would I want my sons to be just like Fabio or Bill Gates). And yes, I realize Paris is doing just that, but good lord, the girl needs to buy a clue about the world around her. To let them be their own characters, and not emulating the world that's being ranted about.

rants, books: jkr, me: thinness
